Null reference exception calling XmlSerialiser (works in net framework) #36181
Description
I have been trying to move some code from framework to core 3.1 and I'm seeing a null reference exception calling new XmlSerialiser(Type) on net core 3.1 that does not occur on net framework. The code supports many legacy projects are therefore it compiles and runs in net frameworks from 4.5 - 4.8.
I have isolated the problem in the following code example.

}I have found a worksaround which is to provide a getter in the overridden property that simply calls base.
public override int Prop
{
get { return base.Prop; } // Required to fix net core XML serialisation issue
set
{
base.Prop = value;
Set = true;
}
}The actual code will need be compiled against framework 4.5 onwards and net core for many years to come as we support legacy clients.
