Problem

evict-scan works after the #972 transport retries, but backup-supabase still fails live on the newest Supabase backup object (2,783,767 bytes): through this sandbox's egress proxy, small R2 responses truncate only intermittently (~1/3, retryable), while multi-megabyte responses truncate systematically — every urllib attempt cut at exactly 409,600 bytes read. No amount of urllib retrying survives that.

Fleet precedent (Supabase backup system): when urllib downloads through this proxy truncate, replay the request with curl, which is immune. The reaper already shells out to a CLI (zstd), so a curl fallback follows the existing pattern.

Fix

  • s3_get_object keeps the urllib path (transport retries + byte-count verification) unchanged. Only when urllib is fully exhausted does it make one curl attempt via the new _s3_get_via_curl:
    • curl -sS --fail --aws-sigv4 "aws:amz:auto:s3" --user <ak>:<sk> <url> (curl signs itself and reads the proxy from the environment), factored behind _curl_fetch so tests stub the transport seam — no network, no real curl.
    • The curl body gets the same byte-count verification: against the caller's expected_size when known (backup-supabase now passes the listing size), else a urllib HEAD's Content-Length. A body whose size cannot be established is refused rather than accepted unverified.
    • Credentials travel in argv (local process list, as with any credentialed CLI) but are scrubbed from every error message; a missing/failing curl raises a ColdStoreError naming operation + bucket + key — no raw traceback.
    • curl binary is overridable via COLD_STORE_CURL, mirroring COLD_STORE_ZSTD.
  • Exact trigger: after S3_GET_ATTEMPTS (3) urllib rounds — each itself burning up to S3_TRANSPORT_ATTEMPTS (4) transport attempts — have all failed to deliver a complete, byte-verified body. Exactly one curl attempt follows; on the urllib happy path curl is never invoked.

Tests

48 tests, all passing (1 pre-existing skip: worker decoder, needs node deps). New TestS3CurlFallback (fake S3 gains truncate_always + a HEAD handler):

  • persistent urllib truncation → curl fallback invoked exactly once, only after full urllib exhaustion (3×4 GETs counted), body byte-verified and filed whole by backup-supabase;
  • curl returning a short body → clear named ColdStoreError, nothing filed, no credential material in the message;
  • urllib happy path → curl never invoked;
  • no caller size → fallback sizes the object via HEAD.

README documents the fallback, why it exists, and the COLD_STORE_CURL override.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • S3 downloads now fall back to curl after repeated download attempts fail. The fallback checks that the downloaded file matches the expected size and reports an error if it cannot verify a complete download.
    • Curl can be selected through configuration; it is required for the S3 download fallback.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup and configuration guidance to cover the download fallback, curl, and related test options.

…deliver

Multi-megabyte R2 responses truncate systematically through the
sandbox egress proxy (every urllib attempt cut at exactly 409,600
bytes live), while small responses truncate only intermittently and
the transport retries absorb those. When s3_get_object exhausts its
urllib attempts it now makes ONE curl attempt: curl does its own
SigV4 signing and is immune to the truncation (the Supabase backup
tooling established the same precedent; the reaper already shells
out to the zstd CLI).

The curl body is byte-count verified like the urllib path — against
the caller's expected size when known (backup-supabase passes the
listing size), else a HEAD Content-Length; an unverifiable body is
refused. Credentials travel in curl argv (local process list) but
are scrubbed from every error message; a missing or failing curl
surfaces as a ColdStoreError naming operation, bucket and key.
Fake S3 gains truncate_always (every GET of a key truncates, the
systematic large-object failure mode) and a HEAD handler. New
TestS3CurlFallback: urllib persistently truncated -> exactly one
curl attempt after full urllib exhaustion (3 outer x 4 transport
GETs), body byte-verified and filed whole; short curl body -> named
ColdStoreError, nothing filed, no credential material in the
message; urllib happy path -> curl never invoked; caller size
absent -> the fallback sizes the object via HEAD.
Why it exists (systematic proxy truncation of multi-megabyte
urllib responses vs curl's immunity, replay-with-curl precedent),
how the fallback body is verified, credential scrubbing, and the
COLD_STORE_CURL override.

Walkthrough

S3 downloads now use a single curl fallback after urllib attempts fail. The fallback verifies the response size, and backup_supabase supplies the size from the S3 listing. Curl configuration, error handling, tests, and documentation are also updated.

After urllib attempts fail, s3_get_object tries curl and verifies the downloaded byte count against the supplied size or a HEAD Content-Length. backup_supabase passes the listed object size. Tests cover successful fallback, size mismatch, the urllib success path, and HEAD-based size lookup. Documentation describes the fallback behavior and test modes.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Catch OSError from the curl startup and convert it to ColdStoreError.

When COLD_STORE_CURL names a file that exists but is not executable, subprocess.run raises PermissionError. _curl_fetch converts only FileNotFoundError and subprocess.TimeoutExpired, so the PermissionError escapes. It reaches main(), which catches only ColdStoreError, so the command ends with an uncaught traceback instead of the named curl fallback error. This happens only after urllib exhausts its GET attempts and the fallback runs.

The fix is to add an OSError handler after the FileNotFoundError handler. Its message keeps the failing binary and the OS reason.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Convert a malformed HEAD Content-Length into the named fallback error.

In _s3_get_via_curl, int(length) on the HEAD response's Content-Length sits inside a try that catches only ColdStoreError. A nonnumeric value raises ValueError, which escapes s3_get_object and main(). The function's documented contract is to refuse an unverifiable download with a ColdStoreError. Catch the conversion failure and fall through to the existing size check, which raises that error.

The path is reachable only through direct library calls that omit expected_size. The CLI's backup_supabase always passes the listed size, so the CLI does not reach it today.

Cover the curl argv and credentials in the fallback tests.

The TestS3CurlFallback tests replace _curl_fetch with fake_fetch. That stub returns the body and never reads the command that _curl_fetch builds. No test checks that argument list. A change to --aws-sigv4, the service string aws:amz:auto:s3, the --user pair, or --fail could pass the suite. The fallback tests also assert access but not secret, so a change that drops or mangles the secret could pass too.

Add one test that runs the real _curl_fetch:

  • Point the store at a small fake executable. Set self.store.curl to its path, or set COLD_STORE_CURL before the store is constructed.
  • The fake executable writes its argv to a file and writes the body to stdout. _curl_fetch returns proc.stdout.
  • Assert that the recorded argv contains --aws-sigv4, aws:amz:auto:s3, --user, and access:secret.

Add a short-body test for the HEAD-sized fallback path.

test_fallback_sizes_via_head_when_caller_gives_none stubs a full-length curl body. It would pass whether or not _s3_get_via_curl enforces the length it takes from HEAD. The only short-body test, test_short_curl_body_named_error_nothing_filed, reaches the listing-size path through backup_supabase. A regression that skips the length check only when expected_size comes from HEAD would not fail any test in this file. The current implementation enforces that check, so this is a coverage gap, not a current production failure.

Add a test that calls s3_get_object without an expected size and with a truncated curl body:

Suggested test
def test_fallback_rejects_short_body_sized_by_head(self):
    patcher, _calls = self._stub_curl(self.BODY[:100])
    with patcher:
        with self.assertRaises(cold_store.ColdStoreError) as ctx:
            self.store.s3_get_object("supabase-backups", key)
    self.assertIn("curl fallback delivered 100 of", str(ctx.exception))

Define key the same way as the adjacent HEAD test.
