fix(cold-store-reaper): abort s3_list_objects on a non-advancing continuation token (#1632) - #3036
Fixes#1632 (queue task 4065; triage task 1762 CONFIRMED the loop on 2026-10-30).
What
ColdStore.s3_list_objects followed ListObjectsV2 continuation tokens in an unbounded while True: a truncated page with a missing or empty NextContinuationToken re-requested page 1 (the token only joins the query if token:), and a repeated token re-requested the same page — both looped forever, appending duplicates with unbounded memory growth.
The listing now raises ColdStoreError naming the bucket when a truncated page returns a missing/empty token, or a token equal to the one used for the current request (no progress). Well-behaved multi-page listings are byte-for-byte the old path. No page-count cap: a large bucket legitimately has many pages; the defect is non-advancing tokens. _parse_s3_list_page and _s3_request are untouched (#2733 / transport territory).
Tests
FakeS3 gains a list_token_mode injection (missing / empty / repeat) for LIST responses.
Three new regression tests assert the ColdStoreError (bucket named, defect class in the message) and the bounded call count: 1 call for missing/empty, 2 for repeat.
Existing test_list_pagination and the S3 transport-retry tests pass unchanged. Laptop run: python3 -m unittest tests.test_cold_store — 81 tests OK (1 skipped).

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of incomplete or invalid paginated storage listings. The process now stops and reports an error when it cannot continue to the next page, rather than potentially repeating a page or restarting the listing. This helps prevent stalled cleanup operations when storage responses are missing or repeat pagination information.
…inuation token (#1632)
A truncated page with a missing/empty NextContinuationToken re-requested page 1 (the token only joins the query when truthy) and a repeated token re-requested the same page — both looped forever appending duplicates. The listing now raises ColdStoreError naming the bucket on either shape. FakeS3 gains a list_token_mode injection (missing/empty/repeat) and three regression tests assert the abort and its bounded call count; the happy-path pagination test is unchanged and passes.
s3_list_objects now raises ColdStoreError when a truncated S3 listing page has a missing, empty, or unchanged continuation token. Tests verify that each malformed response stops pagination within a bounded number of requests.

Summary
Validate paginated LIST tokens pkgs/cold-store-reaper/cold_store.py, pkgs/cold-store-reaper/tests/test_cold_store.py
The listing rejects missing, empty, or repeated continuation tokens. The fake S3 responses and tests cover these cases and verify request counts.
developing-today/code#972: Both PRs change S3 LIST request behavior in cold_store.py. That PR adds transport retries; this PR rejects malformed continuation tokens.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 49d84
The pagination guard addresses the requested malformed-token cases. Additional later-page test coverage is optional; no current behavior defect introduced by this change remains established.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1632 requires a ColdStoreError for missing, empty, or non-advancing tokens. s3_list_objects checks next_token after a truncated page, names the bucket in the error, and stops before another request for missing or empty tokens. It also stops when the token equals the request token. The existing pagination flow still assigns an advancing token and continues. The three new tests verify the error, bucket name, and bounded calls: one call for missing and empty tokens, and two calls for a repeated token.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #1632. Production changes add the required continuation-token progress guard and document its behavior. Test changes add only the FakeS3 response modes and regression coverage for the three required malformed-token cases. No unrelated production behavior or transport code changes are present.

The missing- and empty-token tests fault every truncated page, so each one aborts on page one. Neither test checks the missing-or-empty condition after a valid first page. A change that skips that condition on later pages, while the repeated-token check still runs, passes this suite. The listing can then restart from page one and continue without a bounded call count.
Suggested test direction
Add a per-call token-mode queue to FakeS3, parallel to list_failures. Consume one entry per truncated listing response, so each page can receive its own mode. Add a test where page one returns a valid token and page two returns no token. Assert one ColdStoreError, the bucket name in the message, and exactly two listing calls.

1355 - 1357:
Add per-response token-mode queuing to FakeS3, parallel to list_failures, and
consume one mode for each truncated listing response. Extend the missing-token
coverage so the first page returns a valid continuation token and the second
omits it; assert a single ColdStoreError mentioning the bucket and exactly two
listing calls.
