Design spec for #2238, the follow-on the #2030 trust/visibility investigation routed. Spec only — no permanent feature is built on the unreviewed #2030 investigation (program rule, epic #2056). Implementation slices are named in §9 and are to be filed as their own issues after the review round.

Doc: doc/2026-10-30T13-15-00Z_design_id_writer_set_view_projection/2026-10-30T13-15-00Z_design_id_writer_set_view_projection.md — also at pkgs/id/doc/…, since pkgs/id/doc and pkgs/id/docs are both symlinks to the repo-root doc/.

The five points #2238 asks for

  1. Writer-set object format — a signed idset.writer event kind with the entry list in the CBOR body, not in ChainExt: the signed header caps text at 512 bytes and arrays at 512 elements (chain.rs:44-48), so a real author list cannot live there. Entries are Key | Group{role_min} | Public; version is the owner's chain seq_num so successive versions are a verifiable chain prefix; exclusions are first-class entries that win over group admissions.
  2. Set-change semantics — prospective by default; include_history is an explicit opt-in defined against the set version's causal past (the envelope carries no timestamp, waiting_rows.rs:39-40, so "history" cannot mean wall-clock); removal stops future counting and never rewrites the past; rescind is a separate signed, visible set-version event; every computed view names (set version, frontier).
  3. View projection — author-indexed so cost tracks writer-set size, not store size. tag_claims() is O(store) (claims.rs:44-60), but TagIndex already builds an author key (tag_index.rs:14-21), search::Term::Author already queries it, and events is keyed author‖seq so one author's events are already a contiguous range (mod.rs:24-25). Counted and uncounted are separate Rust types so a UI cannot mix them by accident.
  4. Discovery query — subject/topic-first, returning both sides, uncounted grouped by author with a count (that grouping is the Sybil-flood readability mechanism, so it lives in the result type), each uncounted hit carrying author, signature status and a closed WhyNotCounted. Petnames are rendered as viewer-local annotations with their Label, never as the author's identity.
  5. Storage tiering interface — counted hot/permanent, uncounted cold with published expiry unless pinned or counted, plus a reference-holding rule so expiry cannot strand a hot dependent. Built on prune_behind_cut's existing "protect dependencies and active backlinks" contract (mod.rs:527-545) rather than new pruning. All window lengths and quotas deferred to id: investigate: comms abuse controls — blocks, rate limits, and per-counterparty budgets #2032/id: design: abuse-control primitives v1 for ID comms #2033 — no numbers invented here.

Acceptance criteria

Two things worth a reviewer's attention

  • §1.4 separates this from two near-neighbours that a reader will otherwise conflate: access::AccessPolicy is a flat EndpointId write allowlist owned by the server, and world::project_event_for is the one existing per-viewer projection but projects by scope, never by author. A writer set is keyed on the author, owned by the view owner, and per-view.
  • §6 found that tiering is less greenfield than it looked: prune_behind_cut already implements the protection rule expiry needs and has no production caller. Slice 6 is therefore "give it a counted/uncounted policy and a caller", not "invent retention".

Docs-only change; no code or tests touched. Every substrate claim is cited path:line against main 72545cb9.

Closes #2238.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a design specification for writer-set-based views and discovery, including admission, exclusions, history imports, rescinds, projection rules, and bounded discovery.
    • Documented open questions, abuse cases, implementation slices, and proposed tests. No feature implementation is included.

Design spec only — no permanent feature built on the unreviewed #2030
investigation. Covers the five points #2238 asks for:

1. Writer-set object format: a signed `idset.writer` kind with entries in
the CBOR body (the signed header caps text at 512 bytes and arrays at
512, so the set cannot live there), versions taken from the owner's
chain seq, and entries as Key | Group{role_min} | Public.
2. Set-change semantics: prospective by default, `include_history` as the
explicit causal-past opt-in, rescind as a visible set-version event, and
every computed view naming (set version, frontier).
3. View projection: author-indexed, so cost tracks writer-set size rather
than store size; counted and uncounted are separate types.
4. Discovery query: subject-first, returning both sides, uncounted grouped
by author (Sybil readability) and showing why-not-counted.
5. Storage tiering interface: hot counted / cold uncounted with reference
holding, built on prune_behind_cut's existing contract; all numbers
   deferred to #2032.

All seven #2030 abuse cases are traced to a mechanism or an accepted
residual; six unsettleable questions are routed to #2028 rather than
decided here; seven implementation slices are named for filing.

Every substrate claim is cited path:line at main 72545cb.

Explanation

Issue #2238 asks for a design spec. Its deliverable is documentation. Its acceptance criteria are non-coding: a spec doc in pkgs/id/doc/, coverage of five design points, tracing of abuse cases 1-7, routing of open questions to #2028, and filing of implementation work as separate issues. No coding requirements apply. The reviewed head adds the spec at doc/2026-10-30T13-15-00Z_design_id_writer_set_view_projection/2026-10-30T13-15-00Z_design_id_writer_set_view_projection.md. The repository note states that pkgs/id/doc is a symlink to that root doc/ folder, so the file is reachable at pkgs/id/doc/. Sections 0-2 were read directly. They cover the five-point structure, the signed idset.writer kind with entries in the CBOR body (D1), and version as the owner chain seq_num (D2). Sections 3-9 were not read directly because the read limit truncated the file. Their coverage of abuse cases, the six open questions (OQ-1 to OQ-6), and the seven slices rests on the PR description and the summary. Those items are non-coding, so this gap does not change the verdict. Linking the spec from the issue is an administrative step outside this PR.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed whole-PR diff against the merge base adds one new Markdown file: the design spec under doc/. The summary reports +1531/-0 lines, which matches that one file. No source, test, or configuration file appears in the reviewed diff output. The diff output truncated inside that first file, so later paths in the diff were not seen. The file count is consistent with the summary but was not independently confirmed. The content serves issue #2238: the writer-set format, set-change semantics, projection, discovery query, storage tiering, and the abuse-case, open-question, and slice sections. Per-topic scoping appears as the optional scope field in D1. Named exceptions appear in the summary. The commit history shows review refinements to the same spec (set_id filtering, retention roots, rescind validity, historical membership resolution). These refinements relate to the spec and do not add unrelated changes. No unrelated change was found.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. Codex review round 1 on PR #2739 — all six accepted, none dismissed:

1. include_history was defined as claims NOT in the causal past, the inverse
of what the option promises. Now counts claims IN the past plus
   prospective ones.
2. Excludes(Public) was described as 'everyone except these' but with
exclusions winning it yields an empty set. Split the two configs.
3. Projection tested membership in the current set snapshot only, so
removing an author un-counted their whole history — contradicting the
prospective-removal rule and abuse case 7. Now admission-history-aware.
4. Group expansion prescribed members(group), a current-state query, so a
later group change could alter an unchanged set version. Now
   frontier-aware via is_member_at/access_at_position.
5. Author-grouping was claimed to answer a 10k-KEY flood, but 10k distinct
keys give 10k clusters. Claim narrowed; pagination specified; multi-key
flood retained as an unsolved risk (OQ-7 -> #2032/#2033) and abuse-case
   row 2 downgraded.
6. TagIndex covers tags only, so the did-it tracker's didit.record events
would project to nothing. Now a kind-generic AuthorEvents index; slice 3
   asserts a didit.record comes back.

Adds §10 review dispositions and OQ-7. All 82 internal links verified.

Codex round 2 reviewed the round-1 fix and found three defects it
introduced or left. All accepted and fixed.

7. The round-1 acceptance 'exists v. author in expand(v)' admitted a
removed author's NEW claims indefinitely — one old admission kept
granting future counting, contradicting the prospective-removal rule.
Replaced existential quantification with v_at(view, claim): the set
version in force at the claim's own causal position. Both directions
now hold — old claims stay counted, new ones stop.
8. 'or claim in exceptions' sat outside the applied gate, so an exception
could count a fork-invalidated claim. applied is now the outermost
conjunct: exceptions lift the writer-set requirement for one claim,
   never store-wide validity (resolve.rs:7-8).
9. No claim-frontier restriction, so re-evaluating a saved
(set version, frontier) after new claims arrived returned a different
total. Added past(view.frontier, claim); section 3.4 now says the
frontier bounds the claim set, not just membership.

Section 4.1 is now presented as five numbered clauses, one per defect
class, and slice 4 lists five tests keyed to those defects. Records round
2 in section 10.

Codex round 3 on the round-2 fix. All three accepted:

10. v_at tested claim in causal_past(v) — the causal relation in the wrong
direction. An ordinary prospective claim is written AFTER the admitting
version and so is not in its past; v_at resolved to undefined and every
normal claim was reported uncounted. Inverted to v in
causal_past(claim) — the version the author had already seen. The two
edge cases are now spelled out: undefined v_at predates every set
(uncounted by default, which is exactly what include_history overrides),
defined v_at lets that version's expansion decide.
11. Exceptions are for strangers, but candidate retrieval was restricted to
writer-set author ranges, so the excepted claim was never fetched and the
exception could never fire. Now two paths: author-range scan plus a
direct event_by_id lookup per exception entry.
12. Provenance named only (set version, frontier), so two views differing in
scope or exceptions could produce different totals under identical
    provenance. Now (view_id, config_seq, set_id, set_seq, set_head,
frontier) — a projection is a pure function of (view config, set
version, frontier) and all three are named.

Section 10 records round 3; slice 4 now carries six tests.

Round-4 findings 13-16 and a round-5 self-review against the substrate.

4.1 is now one statement over (C, S, F, R) instead of clauses patched in
sequence:

- retrieval reaches historically admitted authors, so a removed author's
earlier claims stay counted (finding 13)
- explicit prospective (seen_by/admitted_at) and retrospective (retro, with
  per-entry include_history) admission paths (finding 14)
- subject_scope and kind_scope are applied by the predicate, and by nothing
else (finding 15; round 5 fixed the double-filter)
- the resolution state is an input and appears in provenance (finding 16),
with new 4.6 splitting the pinned total from a live validity query

Round 5, a self-review before pushing:

- versions(S) is the owner's applied prefix under R, so a forked set version
cannot make max ambiguous or admit an author (finding 17)
- 3.3 now defines rescinded formally, including through (finding 18)
- neither scope filters at retrieval (finding 19)
- WhyNotCounted drops unreachable AuthorNotInSet (finding 20)
- 4.4's cross-view visibility claim narrowed to what 4.2 can fetch
  (finding 21)

Also: 4.2's cost claim is qualified for Entry::Public, section 7 row 1 no
longer explains case 1 with the snapshot test finding 3 declared a defect,
and slice 4's tests cover rescind and a forked set version.

…2238)

Round 6, both defects introduced by round 5.

Finding 22: defining expand(r) as empty for a rescind while seen_by quantified
over all versions meant a claim written after a rescind selected that rescind
as the version in force -- which admits nobody -- so admitted_at rejected every
admitted writer's claims until the owner published another idset.writer. A
rescind would have been a global outage of the metric rather than a targeted
erasure. 4.1 now separates versions(S) from adm_versions(S) (idset.writer
only), and seen_by/retro quantify over the latter; a rescind acts through
clause 3 alone.

Finding 23: expand(v) was cached by (group, frontier), but a group expansion is
not a pure function of its causal past -- resolve drops fork-excluded
membership actions before the layer sees them, replacing the role with
Role::Other (event_store/resolve.rs:82,124-133). A later fork proof could
change an unchanged group at an unchanged frontier, and the cache would serve
pre-proof membership under a newer R. 4.5 now requires replay under R and keys
the cache on (group, frontier, R); D4 states that a frontier is necessary and
not sufficient.

Also: slice 2 and slice 4 gained the two regression tests, section 10 records
round 6, and the closing note now names the three places most likely to still
be wrong instead of two.

)

Round 7, two P2s, both consequences of the historical-admission predicate.

Finding 24: D6 called entries=[Public], excludes=[Public] the emergency "stop
counting everything" switch, but seen_by resolves each claim against the latest
admitting version in its own causal past -- so claims a writer wrote while v1
admitted them keep resolving to v1 under an empty v2. The switch stopped
prospective admission and left existing totals populated. D6 now says it admits
nobody from that version on and names the two-act stop: the empty version plus
an idset.rescind with target: Public. Keeping the acts separate is deliberate,
so "stop admitting" and "erase what was admitted" stay independently auditable.
3.3 now shows target: Public in the rescinded definition.

Finding 25: BackupNotImported as worded ("predates every version") did not cover
a claim written while v0 admitted nobody, by an author admitted later without
include_history: v0 never removed them and the claim need not predate every
version, so no WhyNotCounted variant fit. Renamed HistoryNotImported and defined
by cause. expand(v) is now also defined once in 4.1 (entries minus excludes),
since D6, the rescind target test and this variant all need that expression.

Also: slice 4 gained both tests, section 10 records round 7, and the closing
note now has four named risks instead of three.

Round 8 of review found two P2s; this fixes both at their definitions rather
than at call sites.

- versions(S) is the owner's applied prefix under R *and* filtered to
  body(v).set_id = S.set_id. OQ-2 permits several purpose-specific sets on one
owner chain, so without the filter a chat set admitting Public at seq 2
governed the dog view and a chat rescind erased dog claims. adm_versions and
§3.3's rescind quantifier inherit the filter. D2's "contiguous prefix" became
"subsequence", which is what it always was.
- D7 adds served view configurations and the writer-set/rescind versions a
projection reads as retention roots, independent of whether they count. A
view's idset.writer is not a claim under its own kind_scope, so "hot iff
counted" could expire the input while keeping the records it explains, making
the projection undefined. Roots go to prune_behind_cut's existing protected
  parameter.

Also fixes §1's stale "slices in §7" reference (they are §9), the flat-file
path note, and two §6 references to open questions that live in §8. Slice 4 and
slice 6 each gained the regression test with a negative control.

§10 records round 8 and the closing risk list grew a fifth entry: the retention
root set is a stated shape, not an implemented predicate.

- Around line 1015-1020: Update §5.1 to define `total_authors` as a bounded or
approximate value, specifying its error bound and a strict cap on the scan used
to compute it so the first page does not require scanning all matching claims.
Align the row 2 abuse-case analysis with that bound and scan cap; do not rely on
`search_store` or `search_terms` for bounded counting.

…_authors (#2238)

Round 11 of review on PR #2739.

- Finding 32: §4.1 gated the selected set version on applied(R, ·) but never the
selected configuration event. A fork at owner-chain seq 10 invalidating a
view.exception there left S (seq 5) healthy while the exception still counted a
  stranger's claim. New `config_applied(C, R) ⇔ applied(R, C.config_event_id)`;
a forked config event makes `project` undefined, the same rule already applied
to S. §4.4 states an exception whose publishing event is invalidated does not
  fire.

- Finding 31: §D7 rooted a served view's configuration and writer-set versions
but not the membership-action inputs its pinned R consumed. Alice's removal of
Bob voids Dave's claim with no fork, is neither counted nor a config ancestor,
so it stayed Cold: pruning it and reconstructing R *restores* Dave's
applicability instead of reproducing the saved total. §D7's root set is now
counted ∪ pinned ∪ excepted ∪ config inputs ∪ resolution inputs.

- CodeRabbit minor: `total_authors` was required to be "honest" with no
definition, while the only index is (author, seq) and `subject` is a stored
value, so an exact total would read every matching claim before page one. It
  is now `TotalAuthors { Exact n | AtLeast n }` over a scan capped at
MAX_AUTHORS_SCANNED (a #2032 value), and row 2's compute bound restated as
  O(MAX_AUTHORS_SCANNED).

Slice 4 gains the config_applied fixture with its negative control plus the
S-forked/C-healthy twin; slice 5 asserts AtLeast on the 10k-key fixture; slice 6
gains the voiding_scenarios retention fixture. Round 11 dispositions recorded.

…oots (#2238)

Round 12 of review on PR #2739; two of the three were defects round 11 introduced.

- Finding 33: the round-11 total_authors cap bounded *distinct authors*, which
does not bound the single-key case — one author with an unbounded history
keeps authors_seen at 1 while the query reads every row, and subject is a
stored value in the (author, seq) index so claim_count needs the whole row
range. Replaced with MAX_DISCOVERY_ROWS, a row/byte work budget with
resumable cursors; claim_count is the observed count within the budget and is
marked a lower bound when hit. Slice 5's negative control is now the one-key
fixture, the case a distinct-author cap cannot catch.

- Finding 34: §D7 rooted configuration, set and resolution inputs but not the
saved frontier tip. F can be an ordinary out-of-scope event descended from a
counted claim — not counted, not an ancestor of any root — and
prune_behind_cut protects roots' ancestors only, so a later cut deleted it and
past(F, c) became unreconstructible. Root set is now
counted ∪ pinned ∪ excepted ∪ config inputs ∪ resolution inputs ∪ frontier tips.

- Finding 35: versions(S) was the owner's *contiguous applied prefix*, but a
voided event does not stall its author
  (test_a_voided_event_does_not_stall_its_author, voiding_scenarios.rs:390-404)
while refresh stops the prefix at the voided predecessor
(ingest.rs:926-930). An idset.writer published after a voided sibling was
therefore dropped and project went undefined with no fork. versions(S) is now
per-event applied on the verified chain, still linear so max stays a function.

Slice 4 gains the voided-predecessor fixture; slice 6 the out-of-scope frontier
tip fixture. Round 12 dispositions recorded.
