feat(platform)!: rules that read the referenced document (PV14) - #5369
Conversation
A propertyConstraints rule may read a value of the document a reference of
its type points at, { "referenced": [reference, field] }, wherever a path
stands. Consensus judges such a rule after the references hold, with the
documents their checks read, so a create adds no read; a reference a rule
reads through is checked again on every replace, with the same read.
A refersTo where entry may hold a condition besides an equality: a const
literal, notEqual, in, or an ordering bounded by a referring property, an
integer const or a time or height of the referring document.
Registration refuses a rule reading what the referenced type can not give
(10231 for the declaring contract's types, the new
ReferencedDocumentRuleReadInvalidError 40148 for another contract's) and a
condition that can not hold (40126). SDK rule listings gain readsReferenced;
pre-checks leave such rules unjudged. Book and PV14 notes 39 and 63 updated.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified all supplied findings against head 28fcfde and consolidated the duplicate moderator-rule bypass into one blocking finding. Two non-blocking suggestions remain; the Codex findings describe defensive checks without a demonstrated defect in the current admission path. This was a static review: the supplied CI snapshot shows Rust workspace, WASM-DPP2, Swift, and Kotlin checks passing, with the main Test Suite, browser shard 1, and PR Hygiene still pending.

- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/class_methods/try_from_schema/mod.rs:3628-3636: Include aggregate dependencies in the moderator-field exclusion
This registration check misses moderator-changeable fields that affect an own-type aggregate. `constraint.property_paths()` collects the aggregate's property bindings, but `ConstraintExpression::collect_property_reads` walks only `read.filter.values()`, not the counted document's filter keys. An `entry` type can therefore register optional moderator-changeable `status`, a countable index on `(roomId, status)`, and `{ "lessThanOrEqual": [{ "countOf": ["entry", { "roomId": "roomId", "status": { "const": "approved" } }] }, { "referenced": ["roomId", "capacity"] }] }`: `status` is absent from the paths this exclusion checks, even though approving an entry changes the total.
With a room capacity of 1, two entries can be created with absent status and then both approved through `ChangeDocumentFields`. `transform_document_fields_change_v0` computes the post-change aggregate, but passes `referenced_documents: false`; the new `PropertyConstraint::violation` guard consequently skips the entire rule, including on the second approval. The existing moderator-field restrictions do not reject a field merely because it is a key of a plain countable index.
Extend DPP's mutation-dependency analysis to include own-type aggregate filter keys and reject referenced rules depending on moderator-changeable fields under the existing registration policy. Add registration and full-pipeline moderation regressions for a constant-filter aggregate combined with a referenced operand.
In `packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/property_constraints/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/property_constraints/mod.rs:1657-1660: Detect referenced reads without collecting every property read
`reads_referenced()` constructs a heap-backed vector of all property reads before `any()` can short-circuit. The new `violation()` guard invokes this predicate whenever referenced values are unavailable, including for ordinary rules that do not read references, and the create/replace state-validation paths perform additional referenced-read checks. This adds allocations and complete AST traversals to document validation merely to answer a boolean question. Implement an allocation-free, short-circuiting AST predicate, following the existing `reads_owner` or `find_aggregate` traversal patterns, and retain collection for callers that need the complete read list.
In `packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/tests/document/referenced_rules.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/tests/document/referenced_rules.rs:235-243: Exercise a time-bound condition becoming false on replacement
This replacement assertion does not isolate the new time-dependent revalidation behavior. `ReferenceTestSetup` processes both writes with `BlockInfo::default()`, so `$updatedAt` remains 0 and the deadline condition stays true. The `deadlineVote` fixture also uses a `deletableDocument` reference, which already forces revalidation on every replace independently of the new system-bound condition handling. The test would remain green if replacement used the creation timestamp or the permanent-reference recheck gate were missing.
Add a full-pipeline case with a `permanentDocument` reference, no referenced property constraints, and an unchanged reference: create before the deadline, then replace only an unrelated field in a later block at or beyond the deadline and assert error 40127. That verifies both the new recheck decision and the updated system values supplied to the condition.

A rule reading a referenced document may not depend on a field the type keeps for its moderators to change, since their change checks no reference and so skips the rule. The registration check looked only at the paths the rule reads, which leave out the keys of a countOf or sumOf over the type's own documents: a rule capping the approved entries of a room by the room's capacity registered with `status` moderator-changeable, and moderators could approve past the capacity. The check now also takes those keys (AggregateRead::own_type_keys). A summed property needs no check: a summable index makes it required, so moderators never change it. reads_referenced() no longer collects every read of the rule into a Vec to answer a boolean: the read walk (now visit_property_reads) stops at the first `$referenced` read, and property_reads() collects through the same walk. Tests: an rs-dpp registration test and a contract create through the ABCI pipeline for the moderated total; a ballot entry whose permanent reference, read by no rule, has `where` ordering its ballot's end after `$updatedAt`, replaced in later blocks until the ballot ends (40127), so the every-replace recheck and the replace's block time are both covered. ReferenceTestSetup gains replace_at for a block of the test's choosing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
All three prior findings are fixed at fbad515, but a blocking moderator-restore bypass remains for rules combining referenced values with own-type aggregates. Three non-blocking findings cover WASM metadata serialization, avoidable literal-conversion allocations, and missing removal-record condition coverage. Verification was static only; the supplied CI snapshot still had Rust workspace tests, JS and Docker builds, and Kotlin build/tests in progress.

In `packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/property_constraints/mod.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/property_constraints/mod.rs:1567-1571: Preserve aggregate-limit enforcement when restoring documents
This guard skips an entire referenced-reading rule during moderator restoration, including aggregate checks that restoration itself can invalidate. transform_document_restore_v0 reads post-insertion totals and calls validate_property_constraints, but constructs its system values from DocumentSystemValues::of_document, which leaves referenced_documents false. Registration excludes moderator-changeable field dependencies, but does not exclude own-type aggregates on restorable types.
For example, a contract configured for moderation can register an entry type with moderatorAbilities.delete enabled, a required roomId permanent-document reference, a non-unique countable index on roomId, and { "lessThanOrEqual": [{ "countOf": ["entry", { "roomId": "roomId" }] }, { "referenced": ["roomId", "capacity"] }] }. Keep the immutable room's capacity at 1: create A, moderator-delete A, create B, then restore A within the restore window. The retained bytes satisfy the removal hash, the non-unique index permits both entries, and the computed count of 2 is never compared with capacity because this guard returns None. Unlike intentionally allowing restoration after a reference target changes, the referenced room never changes; restoration moves the local total and bypasses the existing aggregate restoration protection.
Under the current no-reference-reads restore policy, reject rules combining referenced reads with own-type aggregates on restorable types at registration. Alternatively, resolve the referenced values and evaluate those rules during restoration. Add a full-pipeline create/delete/create/restore regression verifying that an over-cap restore is refused.
In `packages/wasm-dpp2/src/data_contract/document_type_reference.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/wasm-dpp2/src/data_contract/document_type_reference.rs:562-568: Preserve condition keys as own properties at the WASM boundary
A valid new where-condition entry named __proto__ is lost by this conversion. The DPP property-name grammar permits __proto__, and parse_where accepts { "__proto__": { "const": "open" } } when the referenced type declares that string property. However, where_object is an ordinary Object::new(), and set_field calls Reflect::set: assigning the condition object invokes the inherited __proto__ setter instead of creating an own property. The returned metadata consequently has the condition as its prototype, while Object.keys, object spread, and JSON.stringify omit the declared entry.
Import and use utils::define_own_property for these schema-controlled condition keys. Add a documentTypeReferences getter regression with an own __proto__ key created through JSON parsing or a computed property, and assert that enumeration and serialization retain it.
In `packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/property/reference_where.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/property/reference_where.rs:372-377: Compare text literals by borrowing and short-circuit absent values
Every literal comparison calls value_for(), which clones text literals or decodes identifier and hex literals into owned values. Tuple evaluation performs that conversion even when referenced is None, so an absent optional property makes an in condition convert every candidate despite none being able to match. These checks run during document validation, not just contract registration.
Return false from equals_literal before conversion when the referenced value is absent, and compare text literals through borrowed strings. Keep the existing notEqual negation outside this helper so its absence semantics remain unchanged.
In `packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/action_validation/document/document_reference_validation/v0/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/action_validation/document/document_reference_validation/v0/mod.rs:1870-1876: Exercise where conditions against a removal record
This new condition loop selectively rechecks bounds, reads retained values from a removal record, and reports 40145 when a rechecked field was not kept. The new moderation regressions use referenced propertyConstraints without where conditions, so they do not exercise this loop; existing removal-record equality tests and WhereCondition unit tests do not cover its condition-specific lookup and selection behavior.
Add full-pipeline cases that remove the target and then replace the referring document: an unchanged property-bound condition remains unchecked, a changed bound against a kept field returns 40127 when false, and a changed bound against an unkept field returns 40145. Ensure the unchanged-bound case reaches removal-record validation, for example by changing another bound in the same reference. Include a system-bound ordering against a kept integer to verify unconditional rechecking with replacement-time system values.
A moderator's restore checks no reference and judges no rule reading a referenced document, yet it brings the document back into every total over its type. On a type whose moderators' deletions keep records, a rule capping a room's entries by the room's capacity could be passed by deleting an entry, creating another and restoring the first. Under the no-reference-reads restore policy, registration now refuses a rule reading a referenced document beside a countOf or sumOf over the type's own documents there; deletions keeping no record are final and keep it. A `where` literal is no longer turned into an owned value to compare it: an absent referenced value equals no literal and reads none, and a string literal is compared in place. wasm-dpp2 writes the keys a schema names in a reference's `where` and `findBy` (properties of the referenced type) as own properties, so one named `__proto__` is kept instead of setting the listing's prototype. Tests: the restore refusal in rs-dpp and through a contract create; a moderated listing's offer checking its `where` entries against the listing's removal record (an unchanged bound left alone, a changed bound on a kept field refused 40127, on an unkept one 40145, and the `$updatedAt` bound at the replace's own time); a wasm-dpp2 spec for a `__proto__` key. The readsSystem, readsTotals and readsReferenced lists of a rule were each parsed by a copy of the same loop (a missing key is an empty list, a value that is not an array or any entry that does not decode refuses the rule). Each SDK now has one generic helper the three readers call. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… where
Registration now refuses a `where` entry that can never hold or would go
unchecked:
- a `notEqual` bounded by the reference property itself, whose value found
the document (as an equality with it already was);
- a literal no value of the referenced property equals (its enum, length,
byte size or integer range), an `in` repeating a value once read
("cafe" and "CAFE"), an ordering no value of the property meets;
- an ordering bounded by `$updatedAt` or `$transferredAt` (or their
heights) beside a findBy function, judged on the create alone;
- on a moderatedDocument reference a rule reads through, an entry reading
what a removal record does not keep: every replace now checks such a
reference's whole `where`, against the record once the document is
removed, as it does against the live document.
A field of a referenced document is read as what it holds: a string
constant compared with an identifier spells it base58, with a byte array
hex (startsWith/endsWith included), a contains looks an identifier up in a
referenced array, and two referenced fields under equal or notEqual
compare by value. Registration checks each constant spells a value of the
field's type and that two fields compared hold one kind, for another
contract's types too (40148). The parse stays independent of the
referenced type. A reference property may be a dotted path inside an
object; the internal path is now `$referenced.<reference>.$.<field>`.
Fees: a moderator's field change or restore no longer reads or bills the
totals of rules it does not judge, and a write fetches and bills a
foreign contract once, not once per reference declaration.
`where` conditions keep their `in` literals in declared order and quote
strings as JSON in 40126/40127; `notEqual` and the orderings have bound
types of their own, so the combinations the grammar refuses cannot be
built. The referenced-field reads, the removal-record reads, the
registration checks of both `where` loops and the enum checks share one
helper each; create and replace judge the referencing rules through one
entry point; `own_property_reads` replaces the prefix filters in the FFI
and wasm bindings; a rule's referenced reads are found without
allocating.
Docs: the book, meta-schema v3, v14 notes 39 and 63, the js-evo-sdk README
and the wasm-dpp2 docs say all of the above, and warn that a `where`
condition and a rule read absence differently.

The list element fixture's resignation gains alphaMemberId, a member of the charter its electedCharterId names that must be titled "alpha", and the contract update fixtures keep it so their updates still only add. A reference whose value a findBy function reveals still fetched a foreign contract into a map of its own, so beside another reference into the same contract the write fetched and billed it twice. It now shares the write's cache, as every other reference does. The wasm-dpp2 spec's local schemas constant no longer shadows the module's. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…tment's ttl Review fixes for the firstAmong keyword: - findBy beside firstAmong holds exactly "$ownerId": "$ownerId" and its function, and where holds nothing else, so a competitor is judged on its whole key. - The two functions read exactly the same properties; a findBy function over the writer alone, a salt or a tag is refused. - The referenced type must expire (ttl), hold a unique index over exactly $ownerId and the property, and no unique index over the property without $ownerId. Each competitor read is then another identity's, so the writer skip and per-owner cache are gone, and hiding a valid commitment past the 1,000 candidate cap takes 1,000 other identities. - At most one firstAmong per type, never on typed array elements, expression operands or a permanentDocument reference, and not on a type whose creates offer gas sponsorship (judged in check_tx before anyone pays). - A found commitment past its ttl finds no document (40120). - ReferencedDocumentPrecededError takes 40149; 40148 is #5369's. - SystemLimits::max_first_among_candidates is a plain u16, 1,000 everywhere. - The findBy preimage is built once and the owner bytes swapped per competitor (WriterPreimage); every competitor hash is billed. - Expiry arithmetic is shared with validate_document_not_expired. - wasm-dpp2 defines findBy and firstAmong entries as own properties, so a property named __proto__ is reported. - Book, meta-schema descriptions and v14 note 61 describe the new rules and what the unsalted name hash does not hide. Fees re-pinned: lookup 46,440, competitors query (2 documents) 106,160, refused reveal 639,260, accepted reveal 3,574,820 processing and 25,299,000 storage. …first-among Brings in #5369 (rules that read the referenced document, where const / notEqual / in / orderings). ReferencedDocumentRuleReadInvalidError keeps 40148 and StateError discriminant 174; ReferencedDocumentPrecededError takes 175 beside its 40149. firstAmong now also refuses any where condition beside it, which a competitor would never be asked to meet, and the wasm-dpp2 firstAmong entry uses #5369's set_schema_field. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Conflicts: - drive contract migration modules: #5350's `rekey_unsigned_integer_index_values` beside this branch's `apply_contract_rebuilding_document_types`. - v14 notes: #5350 took note 90 (unsigned integers keyed in value order), so the DPNS v3 note moves to 92, after the shorthands note 91; the upgrade's comment cites it as 92. #5369 gave the document reference targets `where_conditions`: the owner-keyed reveal test's expected `DeletableDocumentLookup` sets it empty. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Basic explanation
What this does: A contract's rules (
propertyConstraints) could only look at the document being written. Now a rule can also read the document that one of its references points at. For example, a vote can check the poll it names: that the poll has not closed, that it takes a single choice, and that the chosen option exists. A reference'swherecan now also hold a fixed value ({ "const": "delivered" }), a "not equal", a list of allowed values, or a less-than/greater-than comparison, where before it could only say "equal to this other property".Value: Apps like Pollr, auctions and reviews can have the platform enforce rules that today only their clients enforce: a vote after the poll ends, a bid under the reserve price, a review of an order that was never delivered. A create costs no extra read, because the referenced document is already read to check that it exists.
Risks: Medium. This is consensus code in protocol version 14 (unreleased), so no shipped behaviour changes, but the new paths decide which documents are accepted. Rules that read a referenced document run in state validation, after the reference check, rather than with the other rules, so a write breaking such a rule now gets its refusal after the reference errors. A reference that a rule reads through is checked again on every replace: a replace of such a document now pays for one more read than before, the same read the create made. Errors that carry a reference target (40120) get a new field in their encoding.

Nothing could hold a document to a value of the document it references. TheDocumentPropertyReferenceTargetdocument variants andListElementReferencegainwhere_conditions, which changes the encoding of reference errors carrying a target (40120): a client on an earlier 5.0 beta cannot decode such an error from a node with this change.
