Basic explanation

What this does: When an app or wallet asks a Platform node for data, the answer comes with a GroveDB proof that the client checks itself. GroveDB has two proof formats, the old V0 and the current V1. Today a client refuses V0 only when it verifies with protocol version 14 rules; with protocol version 13 or older rules (what clients use against mainnet today) it still accepts V0. This PR makes every client refuse V0, always. Because nodes never use this rule, it also moves it out of the protocol version tables: it becomes one fixed constant in Drive's proof-checking code instead of a per-protocol-version setting.

Value: Clients stop accepting the older, weaker proof format right away, in the Rust SDK, the iOS and Android SDKs (through the Rust SDK) and the JavaScript SDKs (through wasm-drive-verify), without waiting for protocol version 14 to activate. Every live network has served V1 since protocol version 12, so honest answers are unaffected. The code gets simpler: one constant and one shared check replace a version-table field and three copies of the check, and the platform_version argument that was passed to about 270 call sites only to read that field is gone.

Risks: Low. No consensus impact: no node ever read the removed setting, so nodes behave identically and need no upgrade. A client pointed at a network still running protocol version 11 or older (an old local devnet that never upgraded) can no longer verify proofs from it; no public network is in that state. Rust code that matched on the protocol_version field of the two "unsupported envelope" error variants must drop it (a compile error, not a silent change), and the error message no longer names a protocol version.

Issue being fixed or feature implemented

#4701 added SystemLimits::minimum_grovedb_proof_envelope_version and set it to 1 only in the protocol version 14 table, so clients refuse V0 GroveDB proof envelopes only once they verify with v14 rules. Mainnet is on protocol version 13, so clients verifying against it today still let V0 envelopes through. The reason to refuse V0 (its item binding is weaker than V1's, see #4701) holds at every protocol version, and no live network emits V0: GroveDB emits V1 from grove version 3, which Platform selects from protocol version 12 (DRIVE_VERSION_V7).

Once the floor is 1 at every protocol version, a version-table entry for it has nothing to vary. It was never consensus either: only client-side proof verification read it, so it does not belong among the protocol's system limits.

What was done?

  • New drive::verify::grovedb_proof_envelope module: MINIMUM_GROVEDB_PROOF_ENVELOPE_VERSION = 1 and require_supported_grovedb_proof_envelope(proof, label). It is the single gate for:
    • drive-proof-verifier (require_supported_grovedb_proof_bytes, used by every FromProof and by verify_tenderdash_proof); a bytes-without-envelope failure still surfaces as Error::ResponseDecodeError, as before,
    • wasm-drive-verify (supported_grovedb_proof for the JavaScript entry points, and the native Rust entry points),
    • Drive's verify_compacted_address_balance_changes v1 for its two nested proofs.
      These replace three copies of the same check.
  • SystemLimits::minimum_grovedb_proof_envelope_version removed from every table (SYSTEM_LIMITS_V1 to V4, and the TEST_PLATFORM_V2 mock).
  • The platform_version parameter added by fix(sdk)!: enforce a per-protocol-version minimum GroveDB proof envelope (V1 from v14) #4701 only to read that field is removed from verify_tenderdash_proof, supported_grovedb_proof_bytes and require_supported_grovedb_proof_bytes (drive-proof-verifier) and from supported_grovedb_proof (wasm-drive-verify); their call sites are updated mechanically. None of these functions is public.
  • drive::error::proof::ProofError::UnsupportedGroveDBProofEnvelopeVersion and drive_proof_verifier::Error::UnsupportedGroveDBProofVersion drop their protocol_version field.
  • Docs: v14 note 7 is rewritten to say the floor is not a version-table entry (it keeps its number so later notes keep theirs), and the SYSTEM_LIMITS_V4 header and the v14 system_limits comment no longer list the floor.

Before (client verifying with protocol version 13 tables, e.g. against mainnet today):

let pv13 = PlatformVersion::get(13)?;
Identity::maybe_from_proof(request, response_with_v0_proof, network, pv13, &provider)
// the V0 payload goes on to Drive's V0 verifier

After:

Identity::maybe_from_proof(request, response_with_v0_proof, network, pv13, &provider)
// Err(UnsupportedGroveDBProofVersion { proof: "proof", version: 0, minimum: 1 })
// "unsupported GroveDB proof envelope version 0 in the proof: at least version 1 is required"

JavaScript, before and after:

verifyFullIdentityByIdentityId(v0Proof, false, identityId, 13)
// before: the V0 proof is handed to Drive
// after: throws "... unsupported GroveDB proof envelope version 0 in the proof: at least version 1 is required"

The error message at protocol version 14, before and after:

before: unsupported GroveDB proof envelope version 0 in the proof: protocol version 14 requires at least version 1
after: unsupported GroveDB proof envelope version 0 in the proof: at least version 1 is required

In-place changes to shipped generations

SYSTEM_LIMITS_V1, SYSTEM_LIMITS_V2 and SYSTEM_LIMITS_V3 (protocol versions 1 to 13) lose the minimum_grovedb_proof_envelope_version field (it was 0 there). This cannot modify consensus: the field was read only by client-side proof verification (drive-proof-verifier, wasm-drive-verify, and Drive's verify module for compacted address proofs, which only clients and strategy tests call). Neither drive-abci nor any Drive write, fetch or prove path read it, so block execution, state and the proofs nodes produce are identical at every protocol version. The removal returns those tables to their shape before #4701 added the field.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • rs-drive verify/grovedb_proof_envelope.rs (new): V0 is refused with the new message, bytes without an envelope discriminant are refused as invalid, and V1 and newer pass.
  • drive-proof-verifier verify.rs: the test that let V0 through at protocol version 13 is removed (the gate no longer takes a protocol version); the existing V0 rejection through verify_tenderdash_proof and the 43-path FromProof table test still run.
  • wasm-drive-verify native.rs: the identity, contract and documents entry points now refuse a V0 envelope at protocol version 13 (previously they let it through to Drive). The gate tests in utils/proof.rs moved to Drive with the gate.
  • The recorded proof vectors in rs-drive-proof-verifier/tests/vectors were recorded at protocol version 12 and already carry V1 envelopes.

Run locally:

  • cargo test -p drive --lib --locked -- grovedb_proof_envelope verify_compacted_address_balance_changes (16 passed)
  • cargo test -p drive-proof-verifier --lib --locked (347 passed)

Breaking Changes

None for consensus. Client side:

  • an SDK verifying with protocol version 13 or older tables now refuses V0 GroveDB proof envelopes, so it can no longer verify proofs from a network still running protocol version 11 or older;
  • drive_proof_verifier::Error::UnsupportedGroveDBProofVersion and drive::error::proof::ProofError::UnsupportedGroveDBProofEnvelopeVersion no longer carry protocol_version;
  • SystemLimits no longer has minimum_grovedb_proof_envelope_version.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • V0 GroveDB proof envelopes are now rejected across all platform and protocol versions. Verification errors report the applicable protocol version and the minimum required envelope version.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that V1 proof envelopes have been used on live networks since protocol version 12, and that the minimum-version setting applies to clients rather than consensus.

The client-side envelope floor (SystemLimits::minimum_grovedb_proof_envelope_version)
was 1 only in the protocol version 14 table, so an SDK verifying with
protocol version 13 or older tables, which is what clients use against
mainnet today, still accepted legacy V0 GroveDB proof envelopes.

Raise the floor to 1 in SYSTEM_LIMITS_V1, V2 and V3 in place. No node
reads the field: only drive-proof-verifier, wasm-drive-verify and Drive's
compacted address proof verifier do, so consensus is unchanged. Every live
network has emitted V1 envelopes since protocol version 12 (grove version
3), so honest responses are unaffected.

The tests that let V0 through at protocol version 13 now check that every
protocol version refuses it, and the v14 note and SystemLimits docs say
the floor is no longer version-gated.

Update the version notes so readers understand both the all-version floor and the loss of compatibility with older V0 proofs. These documentation corrections are bounded and do not prevent merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 90f1d

The change tightens an existing verification control rather than expanding access or authority. Clients will reject V0 proofs even when using older protocol rules. This intentionally breaks verification against legacy V0-only deployments; compatibility with every supported deployment has not been independently established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The effect is shared across clients using these version tables and verification gates, rather than being confined to one tenant or query. It narrows accepted network-response formats; no additional credential, service, or storage authority was identified in the compared changes.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A responder supplying V0 bytes to the inspected gates can no longer obtain the older-table exemption. The base-to-head change closes that acceptance path; it does not establish a newly introduced vulnerability or prove coverage of every proof-verification entrypoint.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected Rust SDK path supplies its current client-selected version to proof parsing before processing response metadata. Its existing version-update routine rejects lower and unknown versions and uses an atomic maximum, countering metadata-driven downgrade of the selected policy.

Qualify the compatibility claim.

The PR objective states that clients connected to protocol-v11-or-earlier networks will reject their honest V0 proofs. The claim that no honest response is affected is too broad. Limit it to protocol-v12-and-later networks, or state that clients on older networks lose V0 compatibility.

…a version-table entry

The floor is 1 at every protocol version now and no node reads it, so a
SystemLimits field has nothing to vary and is not a protocol limit.

- drive::verify::grovedb_proof_envelope holds MINIMUM_GROVEDB_PROOF_ENVELOPE_VERSION
  and the one gate that drive-proof-verifier, wasm-drive-verify and Drive's
  compacted address proof verifier v1 now share (three copies before)
- SystemLimits::minimum_grovedb_proof_envelope_version is removed from every
  table; V1 to V3 return to their shape before the field was added
- the platform_version parameter threaded through verify_tenderdash_proof,
  supported_grovedb_proof_bytes and wasm-drive-verify's supported_grovedb_proof
  only to read the field is removed
- the unsupported-envelope errors drop protocol_version: "unsupported GroveDB
  proof envelope version 0 in the proof: at least version 1 is required"

Record a current testnet identity using the SDK recorder and trusted quorum provider, then replay it through the unchanged offline mock. Preserve the positive Swift ID and public-key assertions and all production proof verification.

Red: the existing fixture fails with UnsupportedGroveDBProofVersion(0) locally and in Swift CI after #5294. Green: the fresh protocol-13 recording at height 612272 verifies live and offline, returning the expected identity and six public keys. Test would have caught this in CI: ✖ before fixture repair, ✔ after in SDK replay; full Swift verification runs in CI.
