Basic explanation

What this does: An index can be told to leave out documents that are missing a property (skipIfAbsent). Until now that only worked on index-only types, and only when the missing property was the first one in the index. This lets the property sit anywhere in the index (under a daily time window, for example), lets skipIfAbsent name the properties it skips on, and lets normal stored document types use it too.

Value: Yappr can put its "trending hashtags today" ranking directly on like instead of writing a second beat document for every tagged like. That removes a second transition per tagged like, and with it two ways the two could drift apart (a like without its beat, a beat without a like). Stored types stop paying for a null entry for every document that lacks the property, and those documents stop showing up as an empty value at the top of rankings.

Risks: Medium, contained to protocol version 14, which is not live on mainnet.

  • Consensus: the rules change in place for PV14. Every contract that can register today behaves exactly as before, because it could only skip on the first property of an index-only index, where the old and new rules agree. Devnets running 4.2 betas must upgrade all nodes together, as with any PV14 rule change.
  • Correctness: the new walker logic decides which trees a document builds. Tests compare the exact tree after inserts, deletes and replaces against fresh inserts.
  • Queries: every index picker gained a check. For existing contracts it never changes which index serves a query.

Issue being fixed or feature implemented

  • Index-only types: a windowed ranking such as [$createdAt window, hashtag, postId] could not skip untagged documents. A timeRange must be the index's first property, and a skip property had to be first too.
  • Stored types: could not skip at all. A missing value was always written under the empty (null) key, which costs storage for every untagged document, and the null key then ranks as a value.

What was done?

skipIfAbsent below the first position

{
  "name": "byDayHashtagPost",
  "properties": [{ "$createdAt": "asc" }, { "hashtag": "asc" }, { "postId": "asc" }],
  "terminal": "$ownerId",
  "rangeCountable": true,
  "rankedCountable": { "at": ["hashtag", "postId"] },
  "timeRange": { "on": "$createdAt", "range": 86400, "step": 86400, "ttl": 604800 },
  "skipIfAbsent": true
}

Before, on an indexOnly like with an optional hashtag:

refused: optional property "hashtag" on indexOnly document type "like" appears in index
"byDayHashtagPost" below its first position: an optional property may only be the FIRST
property of a skipIfAbsent index

After: accepted. An untagged like still writes today's window for the like's other indexes over the same grid (byDayPost), but no hashtag branch under it. Under a grid that only skip indexes use, it writes no window at all.

true or an array

"skipIfAbsent": ["hashtag"]
  • Before: refused with skipIfAbsent value must be a boolean.
  • After: true means "skip on every optional property of this index", and an array names the skip set. Both spellings parse to the same index, so respelling one as the other is not an index change on a contract update.
  • On an index-only type the array must name every optional property of the index, because an index path has no way to hold a missing value.

Stored document types

"post": {
  "type": "object",
  "documentsMutable": true,
  "indices": [
    {
      "name": "byHashtagLanguageTime",
      "properties": [{ "hashtag": "asc" }, { "language": "asc" }, { "$createdAt": "asc" }],
      "skipIfAbsent": ["hashtag"]
    }
  ],
  "properties": {
    "hashtag": { "type": "string", "maxLength": 61, "position": 0 },
    "language": { "type": "string", "maxLength": 8, "position": 1 },
    "text": { "type": "string", "maxLength": 280, "position": 2 }
  },
  "required": ["$createdAt", "text"],
  "additionalProperties": false
}
  • Before: refused with declares skipIfAbsent, which is only allowed on indexOnly document types.
  • After:
    • an untagged post writes nothing into the index;
    • a tagged post without a language is written with language under the null key, because language is not in the skip set;
    • a replace that adds or drops hashtag moves the post into or out of the index;
    • a unique skip index only holds documents that carry its skip properties to uniqueness, and the existing unique check already ignores documents with a missing value.

New registration rules

Contract Result
rankedCountable: { "at": ["mood", "hashtag"] } with hashtag the skip property refused: ranks at "mood", above its skip property "hashtag". That level would count only tagged documents, and no query could read it without binding hashtag.
indexOnly index [hashtag, mood, postId] skipping both, and no index skipping on mood alone refused: needs an index without a timeRange whose only skip property it is. A like with a mood but no hashtag would store its mood nowhere and could not be deleted by values.
indexOnly optional hashtag whose only single-skip index is a day window [$createdAt window, hashtag, postId] refused with the same message. The window keeps the hashtag only until the ttl drains it, and document queries do not read windows, so the like could no longer be deleted by values.
stored byHashtag ranked at hashtag and skipping it, beside a plain [hashtag, language] refused: ranks at its skip property "hashtag", whose level index "byHashtagLanguage" shares without skipping on it. The plain index writes the null value into the ranked level, which would show as a null: 0 group.
stored skip on a byte array without minItems of at least 1 refused: which may be empty. An empty byte array is keyed like a missing value.
stored contested index with skipIfAbsent refused: a contest needs every value of every document.
stored index with skipIfAbsent and nullSearchable: false refused as redundant: the skip already leaves out a document with every indexed value missing.

Writes, deletes and replaces (Drive)

  • Inserts: the v2 insert walkers write an index's entry only for a document carrying its skip set (document_takes_part_in_index). They build a level only when an entry of the document sits at or below it (level_reaches_entry), so a skipped index leaves no stranded trees.
  • Deletes: the delete walkers and the indexOnly delete probes apply the same rules.
  • Replaces: update v1 compares the old and new document's participation for each index. It removes the old entry only if the old version took part, and writes the new entry (with the trees above it) only if the new version does. A time-range index empties the side of its set diff that does not take part. Indexes the document leaves run last: their cleanup of empty trees then sees what the indexes it enters wrote, and stops below a tree they share (the owner's value tree of [$ownerId, tag] and [$ownerId, topic], or one day window of a ttl grid). Before, moving a note from tag to topic failed at apply with insertion order error.
  • Merged structure: IndexLevelTypeInfo carries the skip set of the index ending at each level, because indexes with different skip sets can share levels on stored types.

Queries (server and client verifier)

  • Every index picker now admits a skip index only when the query binds each skip property: the generic matcher, the indexOnly terminal route, the count, sum, average and count-and-sum pickers, the multiple-In route and the ranked picker. They share one filter with the time-range rule (index_admissible_for_query). The aggregate pickers used to rely on "position 0 is always bound", which no longer holds once a skip property can sit deeper.
  • On a stored type the binding must exclude missing values, since an index that does not skip returns documents without the property first (under the null key). An example on a type whose only hashtag index skips:
where hashtag > "a" -> served by the skip index
where hashtag < "m" -> not served by it (a normal index would return untagged posts too)
orderBy hashtag (no where clause) -> not served by it
count where brand == "acme" on [brand, color] skipping color -> not served by it
  • An empty byte array (in any spelling) is keyed like a missing value, so == [], >= [] or a range starting at [] does not count as binding a stored skip property. A U8 in written as bytes counts like the array form.
  • A ranked query that pins a stored skip property to null is refused.

Layout, SDK cost, docs

  • documentTypeLayout notes skip levels at any depth, naming the indexes that skip there, including a level only skip indexes reach (a grid only skip indexes use now carries the note, not only the level below it).
  • The SDK document cost from feat(drive): compute what creating a document costs for the SDKs #5159 applies the same skip rule (the helper is shared with the walkers, so the two cannot drift). Merging it also surfaced that it priced a ranked level's rows under a time window with a ttl as storage. Drive writes them in the window's ephemeral batch and bills them as processing; this is fixed.
  • Book: skipIfAbsent now has its main section in the contract keywords indexes chapter, and the index-only, drive indexes, time-range TTL and document cost chapters are updated. PV14 changelog item 58.

In-place changes to shipped generations

PV14 is unreleased (4.2 is in beta and not live on mainnet), so everything changes in place:

  • Document meta-schema v3: skipIfAbsent takes a boolean or an array, and its description changes.
  • try_from_schema generation 3 (apply_index_only, parse_indices): the rules above. The true spelling resolves to the index's optional properties.
  • v2 insert and delete walkers: selected only at PV14 (DRIVE_DOCUMENT_METHOD_VERSIONS_V4).
  • update_document_for_contract_operations v1: also PV14 only.
  • Query pickers: unversioned, shared by the server and the verifier.

Why each is safe for everything that registers today:

  • An indexOnly index could only skip on its first property, so its skip set is exactly that property. The walkers then build and skip the same trees, the probes derive the same entries, and the pickers pick the same indexes, since the contiguous matchers already bind position 0.
  • A stored type could not declare skipIfAbsent at all.
  • Only contracts refused before this change reach the new paths.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • dpp: 26 new tests covering both spellings (equal indexes, accepted respelling on update), a repeated skipIfAbsent key, every new refusal, stored-type acceptance and refusals, and the meta-schema.
  • drive:
    • A new e2e suite on two new fixtures (an indexOnly windowed like and a stored post). It checks what is built and skipped, that deletes restore the exact prior tree, and six replace flips, each compared against a fresh insert of the new version and each checking that the fee estimate covers the applied fee.
    • A stored note whose skip indexes share trees in pairs: moving it between them applies in both directions and leaves a fresh insert's tree. Reverting either half of the replace fix makes this test fail.
    • A stored memo type with a ttl and three deep skip indexes: a replace that leaves them is estimated at about 28.9M credits and applies at about 2.7M.
    • Picker tests for the gate (empty byte values and byte-spelled in included), routing tests on a stored doctype, and an SDK cost case where a skipped index is charged no shared layer.
    • should_lay_out_what_drive_writes and the SDK cost test should_price_what_drive_charges now include both fixtures and documents that leave out their skip properties.
    • A mutation check: removing the replace walker's new-side participation check makes the replace test fail.
  • drive-abci: signed creates and deletes of tagged and untagged windowed likes, and a stored post moved into and out of its skip indexes by replaces. Every step's executed-transition proof verifies.
  • Full suites:
    • dpp lib 5,017
    • drive lib 3,976
    • drive integration 202
    • drive-abci lib 3,689 before the review fixes; after them the index-only and skip tests
  • Other: clippy and rustfmt clean; dash-sdk and the verify-only drive build compile.

Breaking Changes

Consensus: PV14 validation and storage rules change in place (see above). No released protocol version is affected.

Rust API:

  • Index gains skip_if_absent_properties, and IndexLevelTypeInfo gains the same field.
  • index_admissible_for_skip_if_absent takes SkipIfAbsentBindings instead of field names.
  • LayoutNote::SkipIfAbsent gains indexes.
  • index_admissible_for_query joins the time-range and skip rules; IndexLevel gains skip_at_or_below.

The JSON shape of Index gains skip_if_absent_properties, which defaults to empty when deserializing older JSON.

Notes for reviewers

  • Replace fee estimate: it still prunes skip indexes by the new document's values. It is "insert the new document", which already covers the old-entry delete of any key-changing replace; the replace tests check estimated >= actual on every flip, including a ttl type, where nothing is refunded.
  • Layout test: the fixture change exposed an existing gap in its check. A value tree that only preallocation built can stand without other indexes' levels under it, and the test now accepts exactly that case (not the first-level trees, which the contract creates).
  • Not included:
    • a test for a preallocated index whose skip property is not first (preallocation already gives up on any missing bound value, wherever it sits);
    • a run of the wasm-sdk TypeScript layout spec;
    • the Yappr change folding beat into like, which belongs in the Yappr repo once this ships in a beta.

…document type (PV14)

An index could only skip a document that left out an optional property on
an indexOnly type, and only when that property was the index's first. A
windowed ranking like `[$createdAt window, hashtag, postId]` therefore
could not skip untagged documents (a timeRange must come first), which is
why Yappr splits likes into `like` and `beat`.

`skipIfAbsent` now takes `true` (skip on every optional property of the
index) or an array naming the skip set, the skip property may sit at any
position, and stored document types may use it too (an array may leave
some optional properties on the null key there).

- dpp: meta-schema v3 and the generation-3 parser take either spelling;
  `Index::skip_if_absent_properties` holds the resolved set (both
  spellings parse equal) and `IndexLevelTypeInfo` carries it. New rules:
  no rankedCountable `at` level above a skip property; on indexOnly every
  optional property needs a skip index of its own; on a stored type no
  contested skip index and no `nullSearchable: false` with it.
- drive: the v2 insert and delete walkers write an index's entry only for
  a document carrying its skip set and build a level only when an entry
  of the document sits at or below it (no stranded trees); update v1
  moves a replaced document into or out of a skip index; the indexOnly
  probes use the whole skip set; every index picker (server and
  verifier) admits a skip index only for a query binding each skip
  property, on a stored type with a constraint no missing value meets;
  the layout notes skip levels at any depth.
- Book chapters and the PV14 changelog (item 57).

Contracts valid before keep their layout and query routing: they could
only skip on an indexOnly index's first property, where both rules agree.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The SDK document cost from #5159 mirrors the index walkers, so it now
applies the same skip rule: `takes_part_in_index_by` and
`level_reaches_entry_by` in `index_level_tree_types` are shared by the
walkers (through `DocumentInfo`) and by the cost model (through the
document), in both the server and the verify build. The layout test's
fixtures moved to `fixture_contracts`, which gains the two skipIfAbsent
fixtures and `leave_out_skip_properties`, so the cost test prices
skipped documents too.

That also surfaced that the cost model priced a ranked level's rows under
a time window with a `ttl` as storage: Drive writes them in the window's
ephemeral batch and bills them as processing, so `ranking_rows` now
carries the window's `ephemeral` flag.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5e48b

This changes which documents enter indexes and which indexes answer queries. The inspected validation and normal write paths address important consistency risks, but coordinated upgrades and recovery after interrupted writes need further assurance.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A contract using the new declaration can affect membership and answers for its document indexes across nodes applying PV14 rules. The inspected change does not establish a new credential or identity authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The changed document-type structural checks run independently of the parser's full-validation setting. Stored skip indexes also reject contested use and combinations that could create incompatible null or ranked layouts.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Matched participation checks and update ordering support normal execution, but the inspected paths do not prove idempotent replay, concurrent cleanup, or rollback after a partially applied mutation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before PV14 rollout, establish that interrupted or repeated enter-and-leave index updates recover the same membership and proof-visible state as uninterrupted execution.

Replaces:
- an index the document leaves runs after every other index, so its
  upward prune sees the writes of an index the document enters and stops
  below a tree they share (an owner value tree, a ttl grid's window);
  a leaving ttl index queues into the replace's batch for the same reason
- participation is decided once per index before the loop

Registration (document meta-schema v3, in place):
- a repeated skipIfAbsent key keeps its last value, flag and set together
- an indexOnly optional property's coverage index has no timeRange
- a stored ranking at a skip property may not share that level with an
  index keeping the null layout for it (a null group with no documents)
- a stored skip on a byte array needs minItems >= 1 (an empty byte array
  is keyed like a missing value)

Queries:
- empty bytes, arrays and text may encode as missing; `in` reads every
  spelling through in_values
- one index_admissible_for_query filter for every picker, the ranked
  picker included

Walkers, SDK cost, layout:
- IndexLevel::skip_at_or_below is set at parse time, so levels no skip
  index passes answer at once; presence is a map lookup
- the SDK cost tags a write only with the indexes that take part
- layout notes levels only skip indexes reach; the layout test's
  may-be-absent rule is narrowed to value trees preallocation alone built

Tests: note and memo fixtures (moves between skip indexes sharing a
tree, a ttl type's replace estimate), the new refusals, classification
rows, a cost breakdown case; dpp tests renamed should_*, imports hoisted.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not mark the grouping property as excluding missing values.

nullSearchable defaults to true, and ranked validation states that a missing indexed property forms a real, rankable null group. A stored skipIfAbsent index omits those documents.

A single-property ranked query has no where clause. This picker marks the grouping property as excluding missing values, so it can select that sparse index and omit the null group from the ranked secondary. The returned top-k groups can therefore be incorrect.

Keep equality-pin bindings excluding missing values, but set the grouping binding to false.

…oupings-93dcc1

Brings in $moderatedAt/$moderatedBy (#5161) and skipIfAbsent at any
position (#5162).

Conflicts resolved:
- try_from_schema common: resolve the integerRange key type and the
  skipIfAbsent set on every parse.
- insert/delete walkers v2: import both bucket_index_keys and
  level_reaches_entry.
- update walker v1: the bucketed set diff keeps skipIfAbsent's empty
  side for a version the index skips, for time and integer grids.
- layout: skip notes read the bucketing source.
- indexOnly synthesis: upstream's index_admissible_for_query already
  keeps bucketed indexes off the terminal route.
- v14 notes: skipIfAbsent 59 (it shared 58 with $moderatedAt),
  integer-range indexes 60.

Adds an e2e test of a listing moving into and out of every window of a
skipIfAbsent integer-range index, and book text for the combination.
