feat(drive)!: preallocated indexOnly index trees created at referenced-document insert - #4509
Conversation
…d-document insert An indexOnly index whose path is a pure function of a refersTo-referenced document (every property is the referring property or a propertyAgreement key, same-contract permanentDocument target) may declare "preallocated": true. Inserting the referenced document then creates the index's dynamic trees — value trees down to the empty 0 member bucket — charged to that document's creator, so the FIRST entry referencing it costs the same as every later one, and deleting the last entry keeps the trees instead of pruning them (non-preallocated indexes prune as before). - dpp: `preallocated` index keyword (meta-schema v3 / PV14 grammar, same admission gating as `terminal`); shared binding derivation in index/preallocation.rs; apply_index_only rejects the flag on non-indexOnly types and on paths not determined by a reference; IndexLevelTypeInfo carries the flag to the terminating level and contract updates reject flips (find_first_preallocated_change). - drive insert: add_preallocated_index_tree_operations emits if-not-exists tree creations for every binding targeting the inserted type, through the same tree-type derivation and estimation layers as the entry walkers, so preallocated trees are bit-identical to fallback-created ones; entry insertion keeps create-if-missing, so preallocation stays a pure optimization. - drive delete: the indexOnly terminal branch stops the delete-up-tree-while-empty climb at the member level for preallocated indexes — drained groups stay ranked at count 0 and re-entries need no tree creation. - tests: dpp grammar/validation matrix; rs-drive e2e suite against a preallocated yappr-likes fixture (tree preallocation, empty-index query/proof parity, delete asymmetry with re-like cycles, fee shift poster>plain & first-like<plain, estimation upper bounds); book chapter section. Gated in place: the keyword cannot appear below meta-schema v3, so every historical document replays unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds the ChangesPreallocated index support
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The PR adds preallocated index trees during referenced-document insertion and retains empty groups after deletion, shifting storage costs and changing observable index state. The current revision also leaves SDK handling issues: Swift duplicates protocol normalization in the parser, while Kotlin can hide valid large time-range values; these may cause client metadata divergence or missing UI fields. Merge should wait for those fixes and explicit validation of abort/recovery behavior for the new persistent tree lifecycle. Two branches codecov flagged as unexercised: the keyword's value/admission gating in Index::try_from_value_map (boolean parses, non-boolean is a wrong type, unadmitted falls to the unknown-property arm) and find_first_preallocated_change through validate_update in both flip directions. …lity A preallocated tree's one deletion path is the contract's own — entry deletes retain it by design — so the entry walkers' flag rule (documents_can_be_deleted) attached unrefundable dead bytes to every tree of a permanent contract. Flags now ride only when contract.config().can_be_deleted(); member entries keep their refund-routing flags unchanged. Adds an e2e case inserting post and like with owned SingleEpoch flags, pinning no-flags trees vs flagged entries, and renames the suite's tests with the should_ prefix. …bile SDK contract views Contract registration is JSON pass-through in every SDK, so `preallocated` already flows to the chain unchanged; what dropped it was the display layer. The Swift persistence model and parser now carry the full PV14 index keyword set — countable (bool-or-string spellings normalized), rangeCountable, summable + the averageable sugar desugared as DPP does, rangeSummable, the three ranked axes, terminal (with the indexOnly $ownerId default), preallocated, and the timeRange transform — plus the doctype-level indexOnly flag, and both index views render them (PREALLOCATED badge, axes line, terminal, time-range window). The Kotlin example app gets the same through two testable ContractJson helpers (indexAxisDescriptors, indexTerminal) used by DocumentTypeDetailsScreen, pinned by a new JVM unit test. …Long timeRange fields in Kotlin The Swift SDK must only persist, load, or bridge - so DataContractParser now stores every PV14 index keyword VERBATIM as authored (countable keeps its bool-or-string spelling, averageable/rangeAverageable are persisted raw instead of desugared, an omitted terminal stays absent). The DPP display rules - spelling mapping, sugar desugar, the indexOnly $ownerId terminal default - move into the example app's views, mirroring where the Kotlin example app already keeps them. The Kotlin screen's timeRange range/step parse through a new longField helper, since the u64-second fields can exceed Int.MAX_VALUE. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Preliminary review — Codex only
The preallocation implementation is well covered functionally, but both consensus-visible storage changes were added directly to existing v0 implementations while every platform-version table still selects version 0. Four additional suggestions cover partial tree emission, avoidable hot-path allocations, and two test gaps; a locally added delete-fee comparison passed, confirming that item is a coverage gap rather than a current fee divergence. The Kotlin and Swift signed-width findings are refuted because validated time-range seconds cannot exceed u64::MAX / 1,000, which fits in signed 64-bit values.

- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/insert/add_document_for_contract_operations/v0/mod.rs:168-181: Version the preallocation insert semantics
This adds consensus-visible GroveDB operations directly to `add_document_for_contract_operations_v0`, while the dispatcher recognizes only version 0 and every Drive method table still selects version 0. Restricting the `preallocated` keyword to PV14 contracts prevents older valid contracts from entering this branch, but it does not make the immutable platform-version snapshot identify which insert semantics are active. Preserve v0, introduce a v1 implementation containing the preallocation call, add the dispatcher arm, and select v1 only in the PV14 method table.
In `packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/delete/remove_reference_for_index_level_for_contract_operations/v0/mod.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/delete/remove_reference_for_index_level_for_contract_operations/v0/mod.rs:146-164: Version the preallocated delete retention semantics
The preallocated no-prune behavior changes consensus-visible deletion semantics inside the existing v0 implementation. Its dispatcher and every platform-version table still expose only version 0, so the platform-version snapshot does not pin whether drained groups are retained or pruned. Keep the original `CONTRACT_DOCUMENTS_PATH_HEIGHT` behavior in v0, add the conditional stop height in a v1 implementation, and select v1 only for PV14.
In `packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/insert/add_preallocated_index_tree_operations/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/insert/add_preallocated_index_tree_operations/mod.rs:224-242: Resolve every binding key before emitting tree operations
A missing or null source is a no-op only when it occurs at the binding's first level. At a later level, earlier iterations have already pushed value-tree and continuation-tree inserts into `batch_operations`, and returning `Ok(())` leaves those operations in the batch. Referenced agreement properties are validated for existence and value kind but are not required to be present in every referenced document, so this path is reachable. Resolve all key sources into a temporary vector first and emit the preallocated path only after every source has produced a non-null key.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/insert/add_preallocated_index_tree_operations/mod.rs:114-123: Filter target document types before allocating binding plans
`preallocation_bindings` allocates a binding vector and one `key_sources` vector for each qualifying reference candidate before this caller checks whether the binding targets the document type currently being inserted. This runs on every document insert and repeatedly constructs plans for unrelated target types. Pass the current target name into binding derivation, expose a filtered borrowing iterator, or maintain a reverse target-to-binding plan so unrelated bindings are rejected before allocating their key-source vectors.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/document/insert/add_preallocated_index_tree_operations/mod.rs:95-113: Cover storage flags on deletable contracts
The E2E coverage supplies owned flags only for the default non-deletable contract and verifies that preallocated trees correctly receive no flags. It never exercises the complementary `contract.config().can_be_deleted()` branch, where these trees must retain the creator's flags so contract deletion can route refunds. Add a deletable-contract case that inserts with non-None flags and verifies the flags on the preallocated trees.
In `packages/rs-drive/src/drive/contract/insert/insert_contract/v0/tests/preallocated_index_e2e_tests.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive/src/drive/contract/insert/insert_contract/v0/tests/preallocated_index_e2e_tests.rs:386-392: Assert the delete estimate upper-bounds execution
This test is the coverage for the new preallocated stop height, but its delete assertions only establish that both processing fees are nonzero. They would not detect an underestimated dry-run. Compare the estimated and actual processing fees directly; the comparison passes for this test at the exact head.
…ve all binding keys before emitting Review round (thepastaclaw): - add_document_for_contract_operations and remove_reference_for_index_level_for_contract_operations get v1 implementations carrying the preallocation insert and the preallocated no-prune stop; v0 is restored byte-for-byte to its pre-PR state and DRIVE_DOCUMENT_METHOD_VERSIONS_V4 (protocol v14's table) selects 1 for both, so the immutable platform-version snapshot names the active storage semantics. - The binding walker resolves EVERY path key before emitting any operation: a bound target property that is optional on the referenced type used to bail mid-walk, leaving earlier levels' tree inserts in the batch. New fixture pair (note with optional topic / annotation binding [noteId, topic]) pins the second-level-absence case both ways. - preallocation_bindings_for_target rejects candidates naming other target types before allocating their key-source vectors (this runs on every document insert). - Delete dry-run assertion now pins estimated >= actual processing fees, and a deletable-contract case verifies preallocated trees carry the poster's epoch-owned flags where contract deletion can refund them. Issue being fixed or feature implemented
On an indexOnly document type, the first entry under a fresh value tuple pays for every tree on its path — for a like that is the hashtag value tree, the
postIdproperty-name tree, the post's value tree and the0member bucket — while every later entry pays for one item insert. When the index path is a pure function of a refersTo-referenced document (byHashtagPost:hashtagthrough thepropertyAgreement, postIdas the reference), that lopsidedness is avoidable: the referenced document's insert already knows every tree an entry referencing it will ever need. This PR adds the
preallocatedindex keyword: creating the referenced document (the post) also creates the referring index's dynamic trees, charged to the poster, so the FIRST like costs the same as every later one — and deleting the last like keeps the trees instead of pruning them, so the cost stays uniform across drain/re-like cycles. What was done?
