Additional Information

  • BLAKE unrolls the rounds with literal schedule indices and adds the message word before the chained b in G. Both come from the regs implementation in SUPERCOP (source, source), and the submission's reference code already uses the same operand order (source).

  • JH takes the S-box by value and flattens the linear layer over the regrouped even and odd columns, which is the bit-slice pseudo code of the specification (source, section 7.3) and the SS and L macros of the SSE2 implementation (source, source).

  • JH swaps bytes in half-words with a 16-bit rotate with the SWAP8 macro of the SSE2 implementation (source).

  • JH loads round constants and message blocks as 128-bit rows, as the SSE2 implementation does with aligned vector loads (source, source) and as the specification defines them (source, section 7.1).

  • Luffa skips the message xor for the blank finalization block, which the specification defines as a round with the fixed message 0x00...0 (source, section 3.3). Hitachi's implementations run the full round (source). The message-free round first appears in sp-hash's ccminer (source).

  • Luffa loads blocks and stores output halves as big-endian words, the word layout of the specification (source, section 2.2), where Hitachi's implementations load little-endian and swap (source).

  • CubeHash keeps its state in locals across the rounds, as Bernstein's emmintrin5 implementation does (source).

  • ECHO trims the last software round to the cells that reach the digest. BIG.final folds four cells into each chaining word (source, section 3.4) and the 512-bit output reads only the first four (source, section 4.1). The trim first appears in sp-hash's ccminer final-stage kernel (source), later reduced further in Provos Alexis's fork (source).

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added portable proof-of-work fuzzing workflows and support for reducing corpora across multiple fuzzing targets.
  • Improvements
    • Updated proof-of-work hashing implementations and supporting routines while retaining their existing behavior.
  • Maintenance
    • Standardized fuzzing workflows with configurable build options and root-relative paths. Missing fuzzing queues are skipped, and reduction reports an error when no queues are available or a target produces no surviving inputs.

The changes add standard and portable dash-pow fuzzing recipes and update the shared fuzz runner to use explicit flags, features, and root-relative paths. Corpus reduction now combines inputs from multiple queues and binaries. The changes also rename the step-expansion macro and update its callers. They revise compression and data-handling code in Blake, BMW, CubeHash, Echo, JH, and Luffa.

The fuzz corpus reduction now keeps inputs found by both the standard and portable runs. One minor edge case remains. If a user has AFL_KEEP_TRACES enabled in their environment, the reducer can fail on a leftover trace directory. This is easy to fix and does not affect normal workflows.

Explanation

The title names several concrete changes that appear in the summaries: BLAKE lookup folding, JH linear layer flattening, Luffa blank-block XOR skip and transpose inlining, ECHO last-round trimming, and a separate portable fuzz recipe. It is long and lists many items, but it refers to real changes in the changeset and is not off-topic. The sentence is not a single focused claim, so it is a candidate for a shorter title, but it does not fail the relevance test.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The PoW refactors preserve the existing hash data flow and output dependencies; no correctness, security, consensus, or performance-blocking defect was identified. One newly added ECHO doc comment is inaccurate on hardware-AES builds because LAST does not imply trimming there. Lint and the completed platform checks pass; MSRV and some cross-platform checks remain pending.

In `pkgs/pow/src/echo.rs`:
- [NITPICK] pkgs/pow/src/echo.rs:136-138: Document that the last-round cell freeze only applies when trimming is enabled
The comment says chaining cells 4 through 7 keep their previous value whenever `LAST` is set. However, `TRIM_LAST_ROUND` is false for the hardware-AES backend, so `compress_words::<true>` still executes all ten rounds and updates all eight cells there. The implementation is correct, but the comment should describe the software-only trimmed path so it does not mislead readers auditing backend equivalence.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Include named AFL++ queues in reduction.

If a run uses -M or -S, its queue is under the instance name, not default. The reducer skips that queue. If another default queue exists, reduction succeeds without the named run’s discoveries. Discover all instance queues under each root. (github.com)

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The exact review range contains no consensus, security, or correctness defects. One non-blocking architecture/performance suggestion remains in the new JH constant loader; relevant platform, MSRV, and lint checks were still queued or in progress in the supplied CI snapshot.

In `pkgs/pow/src/jh.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/pow/src/jh.rs:79-94: Use a const generic for the JH constant half instead of `usize`
`load_constants` accepts any `usize`, although the helper has exactly two valid modes and its callers pass only `0` and `1`. This is not currently an externally reachable panic because the function is private and both call sites use literals, but the invariant is represented only by convention; an accidental future call with another value would panic on indexing. A const-generic selector expresses the domain at the call site and allows the E8 hot path to specialize the offsets without a runtime selector.
