I'd like to work on this issue if it is still available. I would preserve non-ASCII characters in format_json with ensure_ascii=False, add focused Unicode regression tests, and remove the related xfail marker if applicable. This would be AI-assisted, with the test results and limitations clearly reported. I'll wait for assignment before implementing, in line with CONTRIBUTING.md.
