Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added guided workflows for reviewing Dependabot vulnerability alerts and remediating security tickets.
    • Alerts are validated, grouped, and checked against affected packages and existing tickets; eligible findings can be prepared as vulnerability tickets.
    • Remediation guidance now covers npm and Cargo dependency updates, plus reporting outcomes for RPM dependencies.
    • Reviewers can approve proposed ticket changes before they’re made, and view summaries of processed alerts and remediation outcomes.

Walkthrough

Adds two skill workflows. The CVE remediation skill processes Jira vulnerability tickets, assesses advisory and dependency data, guides fixes, and finalizes validated work after approval. The Dependabot triage skill filters and groups eligible alerts, checks Jira for matching tickets, verifies package presence, and creates vulnerability tickets for confirmed groups. Claude skill paths link to both canonical skills.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Possibly related PRs

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review f63b5

These are skill instruction files, so no runtime code changes. Even so, the CVE remediation skill can miss RPM library linkage or Red Hat patch status when only a suffixed package is installed, and a triage ticket can show a declared version range as an installed version. Fix the RPM name carry-over before merging; the version labeling is a minor follow-up.

Architecture risk: Low · up to 8d202

The changed surface does not map to a changed system, dependency edge, entrypoint, or external dependency.

Changed systems: None identified.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Review details

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .claude/skills/cve-remediation/SKILL.md: Adds the skill metadata and defines the two ticket sources, supported ecosystems, triage workflow, and discovery mode.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .claude/skills/cve-remediation/SKILL.md: Defines eligible and excluded ticket types, workflow inputs and outputs, Jira-mutation approval and data-verification guardrails, and behavior with or without a ticket key.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .claude/skills/cve-remediation/SKILL.md: Adds ticket retrieval from ProdSec and Dependabot, pagination, status and label filters, single-key validation, source and ecosystem detection, and cross-source deduplication. Matching tickets are deduplicated only when CVE, package, and ecosystem agree; after approval, the Dependabot ticket is linked, commented on, and closed while ProdSec proceeds. Single-ticket mode checks the other source and stops if the input ticket is the one to close.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .claude/skills/cve-remediation/SKILL.md: Defines source-specific summary parsing and validates CVE IDs and ecosystem-specific package names before downstream use. Rejects option-like names, traversal patterns, and shell metacharacters; groups valid tickets by ecosystem and package for shared remediation.

- Around line 72-90: The workspace scan in the CVE remediation workflow must
discover every matching package.json rather than only fixed roots and
lockfile-bearing extensions. Replace the sequential cd commands with a loop that
derives each workspace directory and runs npm ls <package-name> inside a
subshell for that directory, preserving failures instead of redirecting stderr
to suppress them.
- Around line 354-364: Update the unresolved-advisory handling in the CVE
remediation workflow so cases where no patched version can be determined receive
a terminal Jira outcome, such as a comment, label, or manual-review transition,
before skipping the fix. Preserve the warning and do not guess a version, while
ensuring future cron polls do not retry the same unresolved ticket.
- Around line 194-218: Update the “Verification sequence” to fail closed:
require each affected workspace lockfile to change or otherwise explicitly
verify the patched resolution, and stop the remediation process on any npm
install, npm ls, or npm audit failure. Run audit checks for every affected
workspace rather than only code/, and do not suppress audit errors; report
discrepancies as failures instead of warnings.
- Around line 238-243: Clarify the Jira-comment rules in the CVE remediation
instructions so the RPM/system-level dependency path explicitly requires adding
the provided manual-intervention comment, despite the global comment
restriction. Preserve the requirement that RPM cases must not change the Jira
ticket status, and align the corresponding guidance at both referenced sections.
- Around line 33-35: Harden the package extraction and command usage in the CVE
remediation workflow: validate the Jira-derived package token against the
allowed ecosystem-specific package-name formats before using it, rejecting
invalid input. Update the affected grep, npm, Cargo, and Dockerfile commands to
pass the package through a shell variable using “--” where supported and
“"$pkg"” quoting, covering the extraction and command blocks around the
referenced sections.
- Around line 102-122: Update the “Container image system packages (RPMs)”
guidance in SKILL.md to require scanning the built image or its package
manifest/RPM database for installed packages and resolved versions. Do not use
Dockerfile searches or infer versions from Dockerfile text; compare each actual
installed RPM version against the advisory’s affected and patched ranges, while
retaining source and dependency classification where applicable.
- Around line 244-303: Update the “Step 6 — Add rebase rules” workflow to
validate every generated rebase rule before declaring remediation complete. Add
JSON syntax checks for .rebase/add and .rebase/override files, and perform a
dry-run or apply verification against the upstream tree for both JSON merges and
.rebase/replace exact text substitutions, failing when a replacement does not
match. Require these checks before commit or Jira-ticket transition.

In @.claude/skills/dependabot-cve-triage/SKILL.md:
- Line 166: Replace the concrete employee email in the JIRA_USER documentation
with a non-personal placeholder or service-account example, keeping the
description of the required Jira account email intact.
- Around line 25-28: The single-alert flow must match the all-alert flow by
requiring an open alert. Update the single-alert gh api projection to include
state, then validate that returned state is open before allowing the alert
through filtering or Jira ticket creation; reject dismissed and closed alerts.
- Line 198: Update the manifest-filtering guidance in the Dependabot CVE triage
skill to skip `.rebase/` paths and package-lock-only manifests only when the
package is not direct in the corresponding `package.json`; retain direct-package
alerts and rewrite their manifest path as required by Step 2.
- Around line 151-153: Update the remotelink curl invocation in the Jira issue
flow to stop passing JIRA_API_TOKEN through the -u command-line argument. Use a
protected temporary netrc/config or equivalent credential mechanism, ensure curl
reads it without exposing the token in argv, and remove the temporary credential
material after the request completes.
- Around line 75-79: Update the dependency scan loop to find directories
containing package.json, while preserving the existing exclusions and avoiding
duplicate directories. In the npm ls invocation, gate output on a successful
exit status rather than non-empty stdout, so only confirmed package presence is
reported.

The RPM path only checks Node linkage from one target. If other executables or user-facing subprocesses can load the RPM, do not mark the CVE as not exploitable with “Node.js not linked against it” alone. Use advisory-specific reachability evidence for all relevant production readers.

Match the exact Cargo package name.

The substring filter can include similarly named crates, such as mime_guess when the target is mime. The later steps then assess that unrelated version against the target advisory range and can produce a false positive. For a package.json without a package-lock.json, Step 4 records the dependency declaration, which can be a version range rather than an installed version. Compare ecosystems before applying Jira deduplication.

The alert data does not retain an ecosystem, and the Jira suppression condition checks only the CVE and package name. A valid npm alert can therefore match an RPM or Cargo ticket with the same values and be skipped before package verification or ticket creation. Require the same ecosystem, and do not suppress when either ecosystem is unknown.

Suggested fix
-For each returned ticket, inspect its summary to determine the package it covers. If the summary does not clearly identify a package name (e.g. a manually created ticket with a free-form summary), also check the ticket description and labels for the package name. Only treat it as a match if it covers the **same package name** as the current group — a ticket for a different package under the same CVE does not satisfy this group.

🟡 Minor · Give explicit manifest evidence precedence over generic Dependabot markers. · SKILL.md:102-118

.claude/skills/dependabot-cve-triage/SKILL.md:102-118
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Give explicit manifest evidence precedence over generic Dependabot markers.

Step 2c classifies a Cargo group as Cargo. However, the created ticket uses the generic upstream/che-code: summary and dependabot label, which Step 3 also defines as npm signals. Because the rules do not define precedence, the matcher can classify the Cargo ticket as npm or unknown. The same CVE/package then fails the ecosystem match and can create a duplicate ticket.

Suggested fix
-For each returned ticket, inspect its summary, description, and labels to determine both the **package name** and the **ecosystem** it covers. Derive the ticket's ecosystem from these signals — e.g. a `code-rhel9:` summary or `rpm`/RPM wording → RPM; an `upstream/che-code:` summary, a `package.json`/`package-lock.json` reference, or a `dependabot` label → npm; a `Cargo` reference → Cargo. Only treat it as a match if it covers the **same package name AND the same ecosystem** as the current group — a ticket for a different package, or the same package name in a different ecosystem (e.g. an RPM and an npm package sharing a name), does not satisfy this group. If the ecosystem cannot be determined on **either** side (ticket or group), treat it as a **non-match** and do not skip — creating a possible duplicate is safer than silently dropping a real vulnerability.
+For each returned ticket, inspect its summary, description, and labels to determine both the **package name** and the **ecosystem** it covers. If manifest references identify more than one ecosystem, mark the ticket ecosystem **unknown**. For tickets without recognized manifest references, use a `code-rhel9:` summary or `rpm`/RPM wording → RPM, an `upstream/che-code:` summary or `dependabot` label → npm, and a `Cargo` reference → Cargo. Extract patched versions for the alert’s package.

The advisory can contain vulnerabilities for several packages. For example, GHSA-67hx-6x53-jw92 lists patched versions for @babel/traverse but no patch for babel-traverse. Read the advisory URL from the REST response.

The documented Dependabot REST response has no security_advisory.permalink; it supplies advisory references and a GHSA ID instead. For that response, advisory_url is null, so Step 5 omits the advisory link even when one is available. Extract a GitHub advisory reference or construct its URL from the validated GHSA ID. [error] 250: [PE3] Credential Access: Code accesses credential files (SSH keys, AWS credentials, etc.). This could indicate credential theft attempts.

Remediation: Remove references to credential paths. Use environment variables or secrets managers. For docs, use placeholder paths (e.g., /path/to/config). Never load .env or token files in production code paths.

Update the `advisory_url` jq projection in both affected alert queries to use an
advisory reference from the REST response or construct the URL from a validated
`ghsa` ID. Preserve a null value when neither source provides a usable URL.

Carry the installed RPM name into the later rpm checks.

The probe at line 261 can match a variant such as <pkg>-libs, but the skill does not record which name matched. The later checks still use the ticket placeholder <pkg>. The rpm -ql linkage check at line 273 sends stderr to /dev/null and ends with || true. If the ticket name is not installed, that check returns an empty soname list with no error. For a ticket named openssl with only openssl-libs installed, the linkage check can miss the library linkage. The changelog check at line 284 can also miss the installed NEVRA's Red Hat fix state.

Record the installed name that matched, then use it in both checks:

Suggested fix
   scan rpm -q <pkg> <pkg>-libs <pkg>-minimal lib<pkg> lib<pkg>-libs lib<pkg>-minimal
+ # Record the installed package name that matched (for example, openssl-libs) as <rpm-pkg>.
-  rpm -ql <pkg> 2>/dev/null | grep "\.so" || true
+  rpm -ql <rpm-pkg> 2>/dev/null | grep "\.so" || true

In the changelog step at line 284, replace rpm -q --changelog <pkg> with rpm -q --changelog <rpm-pkg>.

Record which installed RPM name matched in the cve-remediation package
scan and reuse it for the rpm -ql linkage and rpm -q --changelog checks
instead of the bare package name.

Stop treating an inconclusive ecosystem check as proof of absence in
dependabot-cve-triage Step 4c; carry it forward for manual verification.
