fix(portal): resolve bearer token conflict between resource server jwt and user tokens - #5711
When Apollo Portal is deployed with the oidc profile and has spring.security.oauth2.resourceserver.jwt configured (e.g. jwt.issuer-uri), Spring Security places BearerTokenAuthenticationFilter in the security filter chain ahead of UsernamePasswordAuthenticationFilter.
When OpenAPI requests carry user access tokens (PAT) in the header Authorization: Bearer apollo_pat_..., BearerTokenAuthenticationFilter attempts to decode the token as a JWT, fails with OAuth2AuthenticationException: Invalid token: Malformed token (HTTP 401), and terminates the request before UserTokenAuthenticationFilter can run.
This PR configures a custom BearerTokenResolver in OidcWebSecurityConfigurerAdapter that ignores Bearer tokens prefixed with UserTokenService.TOKEN_PREFIX (apollo_pat_), allowing user access tokens to pass through to UserTokenAuthenticationFilter while preserving normal JWT token resolution.
Which issue(s) this PR fixes:
Fixes bearer token conflict between OAuth2 Resource Server JWT and Apollo user access tokens under oidc profile.
Brief changelog
Added custom BearerTokenResolver in AuthConfiguration.OidcWebSecurityConfigurerAdapter to ignore tokens starting with apollo_pat_.
Added unit test in PortalAuthenticationConfigurationTest verifying that bearerTokenResolver() ignores user tokens and resolves standard JWT tokens.
Follow this checklist to help us incorporate your contribution quickly and easily:
OpenAPI requests using Apollo user tokens are authenticated without conflicting with OIDC JWT handling. Invalid user tokens are rejected with an unauthorized response, while JWT bearer tokens on other requests continue to be processed.
Bearer authorization headers accept case-insensitive Bearer prefixes and varying whitespace, making token authentication more tolerant of header formatting differences.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The OpenAPI user-token filter now parses bearer headers with varied casing and spacing. OIDC resource-server configuration skips bearer-token resolution for OpenAPI user-token requests and delegates other requests to a configured resolver or the default resolver.

The filter exposes an OpenAPI request check and a static user-token resolver. Bearer parsing accepts case-insensitive Bearer followed by whitespace and a token. Parameterized tests cover five prefix and spacing variants.

The OIDC resource-server setup uses a configured resolver or falls back to the default. It skips resolver invocation for OpenAPI requests carrying portal user tokens and delegates other requests. Tests cover authentication, rejection, and custom and default resolver behavior. The Apollo 3.1.0 release notes include the bearer-token conflict fix.
The reported issue does not affect authentication behavior. Merge after normal test validation.

Test bearer tokens through the OIDC security chain.
The resolver test does not check its registration. Add a chain test with a nonblank issuer that verifies a valid Apollo token reaches OpenAPI authenticated and a JWT reaches the JWT decoder. Removing the resolver registration could otherwise leave this test green while Apollo tokens receive 401 responses.

I verified that the standard Apollo PAT and JWT paths work with the OIDC filter chain. Two compatibility issues need to be addressed before merging.
The explicit resolver overrides existing Spring Security AuthenticationConverter and BearerTokenResolver beans. A JWT supplied through a custom header authenticated on the base commit and returned 401 on this PR. Please preserve the configured JWT extraction.
Please use the same PAT parsing rules in both filters and limit JWT bypass to OpenAPI requests handled by PAT authentication. Two spaces after Bearer still yield a 401. With lowercase bearer and an active Portal session, the request reaches OpenAPI as the session user instead of the PAT user.
Please add regression tests through the configured OIDC chain for these cases, including rejection of an invalid PAT, and add a CHANGES.md entry.
Thanks for the thorough review and helpful feedback @nobodyiam! I have addressed both compatibility issues in the latest commit:
Preserve configured JWT extraction:
Injected ObjectProvider<BearerTokenResolver> bearerTokenResolverProvider into OidcWebSecurityConfigurerAdapter.
The wrapper now delegates to the existing BearerTokenResolver bean from the ApplicationContext if configured (or falls back to DefaultBearerTokenResolver). This ensures custom header/converter extractions remain intact.
Unify PAT parsing & limit bypass scope:
Centralized OpenAPI path check in UserTokenAuthenticationFilter.isOpenApiRequest(request) and strictly limit JWT bypass to requests targeting /openapi/**.
Updated Bearer token parsing in UserTokenAuthenticationFilter.resolveUserToken(request) to be case-insensitive and whitespace-tolerant (^Bearer\s+(?<token>\S+.*)$).
Using the exact same parsing rules ensures multiple spaces after Bearer or lowercase bearer are properly recognized as user tokens, avoiding malformed token errors and preventing fallback to active Portal session identities.
Regression tests & CHANGES.md:
Added regression tests through the OIDC security filter chain in PortalAuthenticationConfigurationTest covering:
Valid user token with mixed-case and multi-space bearer ... passing through authenticated as UserTokenAuthenticationToken.
Invalid user token rejected with HTTP 401 (Unauthorized user token).
Preservation of custom BearerTokenResolver beans.
Non-OpenAPI requests preserving standard JWT resolution.
Added parameterized unit tests in UserTokenAuthenticationFilterTest for various Bearer formats.

Place the field and tearDown after the other fields.
The userTokenService mock and the @AfterEach method appear before the contextRunner field. The runner lambda uses this.userTokenService, so the code works. The layout still splits the field declarations. Move the tearDown method below the field block for readability.
