Tracking issue: #1397

Part of the file-write-safety series (#1375) — B1: per-write checkpoints, task-start baseline, and the perWriteCheckpoints setting.

What

  • Per-write checkpoints — write_to_file, edit_file, and apply_patch now record one suppressed checkpoint after each successful write. apply_patch records exactly one checkpoint for the whole patch (not per file).
  • Task-start baseline — initiateTaskLoop records a one-time task-start baseline checkpoint, guarded by taskStartBaselineDone (the loop runs on both start and resume, so the guard makes the baseline fire exactly once per task instance).
  • perWriteCheckpoints setting (default-on) —
    • defined in packages/types/src/global-settings.ts (DEFAULT_PER_WRITE_CHECKPOINTS + z.boolean().optional()) and included in ExtensionState (vscode-extension-host.ts),
    • exposed as a checkbox in CheckpointSettings and wired through SettingsView's cachedState round-trip (initial value + handleSubmit payload),
    • persisted through the generic ContextProxy path (same shape as enableCheckpoints — no special webviewMessageHandler handling),
    • surfaced by ClineProvider.getState() and getStateToPostToWebview() with the shared default,
    • default-on in the webview's createInitialExtensionState (mirrors enableCheckpoints).
  • Live, default-on semantics — hooks read the current state and skip only when the setting is explicitly false.

Tests

  • Task.spec.ts — task-start baseline: exactly one suppressed save on the first initiateTaskLoop run (guard verified across two loop invocations); no save when the setting is off; the baseline save is awaited before the first request (a held-promise regression test proves the request loop does not start first).
  • writeToFileTool / editFileTool / applyPatchTool specs — one suppressed save per successful write; none when the setting is disabled; none on the failure path.
  • ClineProvider.spec.ts — saved-value and default round-trips for both getState and getStateToPostToWebview (true / false / unset).
  • New CheckpointSettings.spec.tsx — default-on checkbox binding, saved-false and saved-true bindings (the explicit persisted value, not only the default-on fallback), and toggle caching through setCachedStateField.
  • i18n perWrite key (label + description) added to all 18 locales.

Content source of record

kind: branch - feat/per-write-checkpoints-b1, refreshed onto current main by merge b01a334e4 (upstream/main 9c069e94ef) so this branch carries nothing main already has. No unit content changed in the refresh.

Budget (own delta at this head)

36 files, +914 / -19 vs main 9c069e94ef (tree-to-tree). Authored code is well under the series cap; ~34 lines are CI-mandated i18n parity across 18 locales.

How to test

pnpm --dir src exec vitest run --globals --no-file-parallelism core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/writeToFileTool.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/editFileTool.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
pnpm --dir webview-ui exec vitest run --globals src/context/__tests__/ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx src/components/settings/__tests__/CheckpointSettings.spec.tsx
node scripts/find-missing-translations.js

Expected: all green; src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.

Verification at this head (0310c997e)

  • CI: 19/19 checks green at head (incl. check-translations, platform-unit-test ubuntu+windows, compile with the new format:check step, knip, e2e-mock, Build test VSIX).
  • Local: ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean on all 10 touched src files; tsc --noEmit clean; src vitest 469 passed / 5 skipped / 0 failed (5 files, at the merge head; re-run after the follow-up: Task.spec 177/177 green); webview-ui vitest 28 passed (2 files); translations check clean; model-check 9/10 locally (the 10th script fails only on the local Node 25 + tsx ESM-resolution defect - reproduces on an untouched main checkout; green in CI).
  • Prettier: clean on every file in the unit diff. src/eslint-suppressions.json: no added or increased entries.

Updated this round (refresh onto main 9c069e94ef)

  • b01a334e4 - merge upstream/main. Two conflicts, both test files, resolved keeping both sides: ClineProvider.spec.ts keeps this PR's five perWriteCheckpoints state tests and main's two blanket-auto-deny tests; ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx takes main's shared DEFAULT_WRITE_DELAY_MS placeholder shape (writeDelayMs: 0) and keeps this PR's perWriteCheckpoints key. No production-code conflicts.

Update (CodeRabbit-sync from trial #1413): head b98f15903 — createInitialExtensionState exported + focused test asserting the pre-hydration perWriteCheckpoints default (trial addendum 4fc14c4). Review context: trial PR #1413.

Review-gate re-trigger (2026-08-30): empty commit abc10b4 (no code change) re-runs CI and CodeRabbit current-head review under the org new PR review gate; the code head remains b98f159.

Visual regression note (2026-08-30): The advisory extension-host-visual check (chat-dark sidebar snapshot) fails on this branch with a deterministic 973-pixel delta localized to the completion-result area. Root cause: the B1 task-start baseline checkpoint (per-write checkpoints default on, allowEmpty) adds a suppressed checkpoint_saved row to the message history, which getCompletionCheckpoint() picks up, so SeeNewChangesButtons render below the completion row; the suite baseline (recorded pre-FWS in #1426) has no such buttons. Every other pixel is identical, and the delta is pixel-identical across all branches containing B1 (1404/1406/1410/1411/1412/1413), while non-B1 branches are green. This is a new-expected-behavior vs stale-baseline mismatch rather than a rendering regression. Flagged for maintainers: either update the electron-chat-dark-sidebar.png baseline on the B1 branch or adjust the scene/component behavior. Advisory check only — it does not block the required gates.

  • c07bea302 - review follow-up: task-start baseline is now skipped on history resumes - initiateTaskLoop gates the baseline on _isHistoryTask so a resumed task no longer records a second baseline (design: exactly once per task; the resumed shadow repo already carries the original baseline). Regression test added; negative control verified (reverting the guard reddens the new test). Ported to the sibling units (PR 1406 ba5908ba2, PR 1411 c3bef96f7, PR 1410 8386e3739, PR 1412 d125039af).
  • 93e3640e4 - review follow-up (ported from PR 1410): baseline skipped on already-aborted tasks (regression test added; Task.spec 178/178), and WriteToFileTool/EditFileTool now read perWriteCheckpoints through the shared DEFAULT_PER_WRITE_CHECKPOINTS constant. tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • faf3f9d33 - review follow-up (ported from PR 1410): the baseline block rechecks this.abort after the getState() lookup, so cancellation during the deferred state lookup skips the baseline save; regression test added (Task.spec 179/179, negative control verified). tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • fb576709d - review follow-up (Persistence Integrity row - fixed in code, not argued): EditFileTool and ApplyPatchTool fired checkpointSave without awaiting it, so the diff-state reset and the queued-work handoff could race an unfinished checkpoint commit (and shutdown could lose it). Both now await the save, matching WriteToFileTool and the semantics the later units of this series settled on. Held-promise regression tests pin the ordering on both paths (negative controls verified: reverting to fire-and-forget reddens both). Tool specs 92 passed / 5 skipped, tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • cae09fbd5 - review follow-up (Regression Evidence row): added the requested multi-file apply_patch test asserting exactly one checkpointSave for the complete patch (B1's one-checkpoint-per-patch contract). The row's SettingsView half is owned by the unit that ships the control (see PR 1411's dispositions); the base unit's provider/round-trip tests already cover the setting here. Ported context: the same await fix landed on PR 1406 (4c0bc15bc), the only other unit still carrying the unawaited EditFileTool call.
  • c6a23c511 - review follow-up (queued-message handoff, raised on PR 1404): the per-file handlers processed queued messages before execute awaited the whole-patch checkpoint, so a queued turn (and its own checkpointed writes) could start mid-commit. The handoff is now deferred to after the checkpoint attempt - one handoff per successful patch, independent of the checkpoint setting or outcome - matching the deferral the journal-carrying unit already shipped. Tests: held-promise deferral (negative control verified), handoff with checkpoints disabled, no handoff on failure. Tool specs green, tsc/eslint/Prettier clean.
  • 484d5cf0e - review follow-up (Lifecycle Resource Cleanup row): processQueuedMessages dequeued unconditionally, and since tools now await the checkpoint before handing off, a cancellation landing during that await consumed the queued message and dropped it (submitUserMessage rejects once abort is set). The dequeue is now skipped while the task is aborted - guarding every handoff site at the lowest layer - with a regression test (negative control verified: the unconditional dequeue reddens it). Task spec 180 passed.
  • 484d5cf0e - review follow-up (Regression Evidence row, settings half): SettingsView save round-trip tests assert the durable payload - default-on perWriteCheckpoints: true when the setting is unset, and an explicit perWriteCheckpoints: false after unchecking and clicking Save (webview-ui per AGENTS.md is the layer for React forms/save wiring; the toggle binding itself was already covered by CheckpointSettings.spec). Webview settings specs 34 passed, webview tsc clean.

Review dispositions (registered once)

  • Lifecycle Resource Cleanup (task-start baseline cancellation row): by design, bounded. initiateTaskLoop already checks abort before the baseline and rechecks after the state lookup, so a canceled task performs no new checkpoint work; the only remaining window is a cancellation landing while the single awaited baseline commit is in flight, which costs at most one bounded shadow-git commit that dispose then reaps. Threading an AbortSignal through getCheckpointService/checkpointSave (the suggested fix) is a checkpoint-service-wide redesign beyond this unit's fidelity contract - the same posture as the registered journal-batch decision on the journal unit.

  • Functional Correctness (partial-failure handoff thread): argued - see the thread reply. Requiring full-patch success would strand queued input on any partial failure, changing upstream behavior (handlers handed off after each successful write); the deferral keeps the upstream condition (a write happened) and moves only the timing after the checkpoint attempt. Pinned by two tests at 0310c99.

  • Persistence Integrity (move/checkpoint row, PR 1404 walkthrough): by design. When an Update/Move writes the destination and the source unlink then fails, the destination file is genuinely on disk; the checkpoint must record the actual workspace state, and suppressing the checkpoint (the suggested fix) would leave the written file outside the undo chain - strictly worse for persistence integrity. The journal-carrying units of this series keep exactly this semantics and say so in code ("the destination file was written to disk before the source deletion failed, so the write still needs to be checkpointed"). A full move-transaction rollback is a redesign beyond this unit's fidelity contract, same posture as the registered journal-batch decision.

  • Regression Evidence (Playwright fixture half): by placement. AGENTS.md routes React rendering/forms/save wiring to webview-ui tests, which cover the control (CheckpointSettings.spec) and the save payload (SettingsView.spec, added at 484d5cf); apps/vscode-e2e is reserved for real-host behavior, and the settings toggle has no extension-host-specific behavior to snapshot. The webview-visual CI job already pixel-covers the settings surface.

  • 0310c997e - review follow-up (partial-failure handoff thread): argued, not changed - upstream handed off in each handler after every successful write, so partial failures and access-check early returns drained the queue; the deferral keeps that condition and moves only the timing. Two fidelity tests pin it (partial failure still hands off; access-check early return still hands off). Execute specs 31 passed.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Automatically save a checkpoint after each successful file write. Multi-file patches save one checkpoint for the entire patch.
    • Create a baseline checkpoint when a task starts.
    • Per-write checkpoints are enabled by default and can be turned off in Checkpoint settings.
    • Added localized setting labels and descriptions across supported languages.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Keep queued messages untouched when a task has been aborted.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for checkpoint settings, task-start baselines, and successful and unsuccessful file operations.

Walkthrough

Adds a default-enabled perWriteCheckpoints setting and exposes it through provider state and the settings UI. When enabled, task startup records one baseline checkpoint. Successful writes and edits record checkpoints, and a fully successful patch records one checkpoint.

Several failure paths in patch application and task startup remain open. A partial patch can still trigger queued work. A failed settings read can stop a task or prevent its checkpoint. A half-completed file move can be recorded as a successful checkpoint. Fix these before merging.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The PR adds a durable visible setting in CheckpointSettings.tsx (the perWriteCheckpoints checkbox and description at lines 39-52), but it adds no Playwright component visual test or component snapshot for that UI. The new CheckpointSettings.spec.tsx is a mocked DOM unit test. The Playwright component configuration matches **/*.visual.tsx, and existing settings components such as UISettings and AutoApproveSettings use toHaveScreenshot; no checkpoint visual story or snapshot exists. The changed Electron sidebar PNG is not a Playwright component snapshot for this setting.

Resolution

Add a Playwright component story and .visual.tsx test for CheckpointSettings or the checkpoints settings view. Assert the new checkbox is visible in the relevant VS Code themes and capture the required component snapshots. Register the story in the Playwright gallery, then commit the generated snapshots.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

apply_patch can persist a corrupt partial move. In handleUpdateFile, the move writes the destination, catches and ignores a failed source unlink (ApplyPatchTool.ts:463-484), then returns true (lines 498-503). The new execute path treats that result as a successful patch and awaits checkpointSave (lines 165-175). If the source is locked or denied, the checkpoint records both the old and new paths, with no rollback or explicit partial-failure state. A later restore can therefore reproduce the duplicate-file state. Multi-file patches have the same gap when an earlier operation succeeds and a later handler returns false: the earlier change remains, but the patch is not checkpointed or rolled back.

Resolution

Make each move handler return failure when source deletion fails. Roll back the destination and restore the source when possible. Apply the same transactional policy to multi-file patches: retain pre-change contents, undo all successful operations when any operation fails, report the patch as partially failed, avoid resetting the failure state, and do not hand off queued work until rollback or an explicit partial-state checkpoint completes. Only call the whole-patch checkpoint after every filesystem operation succeeds.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The new task-start baseline can continue checkpoint work after cancellation or disposal. Task.initiateTaskLoop checks !this.abort before calling this.checkpointSave(true, true) at src/core/task/Task.ts:3717-3724, but checkpointSave immediately awaits getCheckpointService and then calls saveCheckpoint without another abort or disposal check (src/core/checkpoints/index.ts:212-227). Service initialization can wait in pWaitFor for the checkpoint timeout (src/core/checkpoints/index.ts:78-106). If cancellation lands during that wait, disposeOnce sets this.abort = true (src/core/task/Task.ts:3526-3537), but the baseline still saves when initialization finishes and its checkpoint event handler can still call task.say and post provider state. The new awaited per-write calls in EditFileTool, WriteToFileTool, and ApplyPatchTool have the same cancellation window. This is changed lifecycle work that can retain the task while the uncancellable checkpoint operation completes and perform checkpoint work after disposal.

Resolution

Make checkpoint initialization and saves cancellation-aware. Pass an abort signal or task-liveness callback through getCheckpointService and checkpointSave, cancel any initialization wait during Task.dispose, and check abort/disposed state after every awaited initialization and save before committing or emitting checkpoint state. Ensure the per-write tool paths skip checkpoint completion and queued-message handoff when cancellation or disposal occurs.

Add focused assertions for perWriteCheckpoints.

These edits only populate the fixtures with true. Add cases for true, false, and omitted values, then assert the merged state. The default true can hide a missing propagation path.

As per coding guidelines, changed *.spec.tsx files must cover state behavior and true, false, and unset cases when defaults could hide omissions.

…heckpoint default

createInitialExtensionState is exported and a focused test asserts it initializes perWriteCheckpoints to true: a regression that dropped the key from the initializer (rather than from a merge fixture) would otherwise stay hidden (CodeRabbit finding on trial Zoo-Code-Org#1413).

Comment thread src/core/task/Task.ts Outdated
The baseline guard was instance-local, so a Task constructed from a history
item (resumeTaskFromHistory) recorded a second task-start baseline; the
design in issue 1397 requires exactly one baseline per task, and the
resumed task's shadow repo already carries the original baseline for the
first post-resume write checkpoint to diff against. Gate the baseline on
the original start path and add a regression test.

Review feedback on PR 1404; the identical fix is ported to every unit
carrying the B1 task-loop code.
- initiateTaskLoop skips the task-start baseline when the task is already
aborted: the loop will never run, so the awaited save would only add
latency to a task being disposed. Regression test added.
- WriteToFileTool/EditFileTool read perWriteCheckpoints through the
shared DEFAULT_PER_WRITE_CHECKPOINTS constant instead of a hardcoded
true, matching the provider reader (AGENTS.md: consumers use the same
  default).

Review feedback on PR 1410; applied at the owning unit and ported across
the chain.
Cancellation can land while the perWriteCheckpoints state lookup is
pending; the pre-lookup guard alone would still await checkpointSave for
a canceled task. Recheck this.abort after the lookup and before the save,
and cover the deferred-lookup cancellation window with a regression test.

Review feedback on PR 1410; ported to every unit carrying the task-loop
code.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Await checkpointSave so edit checkpoints cannot overlap or collapse.

void checkpointSave(task, false, true) does not wait for the checkpoint. WriteToFileTool.ts awaits the same call, and its comment states the reason: an unawaited checkpoint lets the next write start before the commit finishes. Two writes can then fold into one commit, and staging can overlap with the next write. edit_file has the same hazard. task.processQueuedMessages() runs right after this block and schedules the next user message. This behavior also contradicts the per-write contract of one checkpoint per successful write. Await the call, as write_to_file does.

Proposed fix
 			if (perWriteCheckpoints) {
-				void checkpointSave(task, false, true).catch(() => {})
+ // Await so the checkpoint finishes before the next write starts.
+				await checkpointSave(task, false, true).catch(() => {})
 			}

Learning: In Zoo-Code, issue #1397 requires one task-start baseline per task, created only on the original start path. History resumes must reuse the original baseline in the task's shadow repository, not create another task-start baseline. This preserves a parent checkpoint for the first post-resume write.

EditFileTool and ApplyPatchTool fired checkpointSave without awaiting
it: the diff state reset and queued work could proceed while the
checkpoint was still staging/committing, a queued write's own
checkpoint could interleave, and shutdown could lose the commit
entirely. Await the save (WriteToFileTool already did), matching the
semantics the later units of this series settled on. Held-promise
regression tests pin the ordering on both paths.

Review feedback on PR 1404; the EditFileTool half is ported to the
sibling unit that still carries the unawaited call.
The walkthrough's Regression Evidence row asked for a multi-file
apply_patch test asserting exactly one checkpointSave for the complete
patch - B1's core contract (a regression to per-change saves would
double the checkpoint count). Covered on the journal-carrying unit
already; this adds the equivalent on the base unit.

Learning: In Zoo-Code, issue #1397 requires one task-start baseline per task, created only on the original start path. History resumes must reuse the original baseline in the task's shadow repository, not create another task-start baseline. This preserves a parent checkpoint for the first post-resume write.

Comment thread src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts
…nt completes

The per-file handlers processed queued messages right after each
successful write, before execute() awaited the whole-patch checkpoint.
processQueuedMessages schedules submitUserMessage on a timer, so a
queued turn - and the writes it triggers - could start while the
patch checkpoint was still staging and committing, interleaving its
own checkpoint with this commit. The handoff is now deferred to after
the checkpoint attempt: one handoff per successful patch, independent
of the checkpoint setting or outcome, so no path strands queued
messages and no queued turn can race the commit. This matches the
semantics the journal-carrying unit of this series already settled on
and brings the remaining units in line.

Review feedback on PR 1404; ports carry the equivalent deferral and
ordering tests.
Tools now await the write checkpoint before handing off queued work,
so a cancellation can land between the write and the handoff.
processQueuedMessages dequeued unconditionally and scheduled
submitUserMessage, which rejects once abort is set - the queued
message was consumed and dropped instead of being left for the
resume/abort flow. The dequeue is now skipped while the task is
aborted, guarding every handoff site at the lowest layer. Regression
test pins that an aborted task leaves the queue intact (negative
control verified: the unconditional dequeue reddens it).

Review feedback on PR 1404 (Lifecycle Resource Cleanup row); ported to
every unit of this series.

Handle provider-state failures in checkpoint-setting gates. Both paths await getState() without handling rejection. A settings-read failure stops a new task or reports a completed file deletion as a tool error without attempting its checkpoint.

  • src/core/task/Task.ts#L3719-L3719: handle read failure so the new task can enter its loop with default-on checkpoint behavior.
  • src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts#L169-L169: handle read failure separately from patch execution so a successful patch still attempts its checkpoint.

As per path instructions, “Verify extension/webview contracts, cancellation and error propagation.”

Handle rejection from `providerRef.deref()?.getState()` in the

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Report a failed source deletion as a failed move.

When the destination write succeeds but fs.unlink(absolutePath) fails, the catch block only logs the failure. This true result then lets execute checkpoint the patch as successful, with both source and destination files present. Return failure and report the partial move instead of recording a successful-patch checkpoint. As per path instructions, “Check persistence and lifecycle invariants: awaited atomic writes, rollback or explicit partial-failure behavior.”

Update the move operation’s fs.unlink failure handling to return failure and
report that the destination was written but the source remains, rather than
returning success. Ensure execute does not checkpoint the patch as successful
after this partial move.

Comment thread src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts
…heckpoint fix

Upstream handed off queued messages in each handler right after
every successful write, so a patch whose first write succeeded and
whose later write failed - or whose later file failed the access
check and returned early - still drained the queue. The deferral
preserves that condition and only moves its timing after the
checkpoint attempt; requiring full-patch success would strand queued
input on any partial failure, a behavior change beyond the
checkpoint-ordering fix this unit ships. Two tests pin the fidelity
semantics against future regressions in either direction.

Review feedback on PR 1404 (thread on the finally-block handoff).
