Profile pictures usually have a square aspect ratio.
Instead of accepting any aspect ratio and resizing it, I think it would be better to
- Backend: only accept square aspect ratio images
- Frontend: show a selector on top of the image so that the user can select a square part of the image. I've included a screenshot how slack does it.
