EBS: check Twitch PubSub credentials at startup; app: warn when Twitch refuses them - #220
Conversation
…witch refuses them A wrong Twitch__ExtensionSecret was completely silent. The EBS started, stored every card, answered /healthz ok, and never delivered a live update (every PubSub call 403 'JWT could not be verified'); viewers who loaded the channel still saw the card, so nothing looked broken. EBS - TwitchCredentialProbe sends the real PubSub endpoint a request signed like a broadcast but aimed at a target Twitch cannot deliver to, so nothing ever reaches a viewer. 401/403 = rejected (logged at error, naming the three settings to check); 400 or success = not refused; anything else is inconclusive and changes nothing. It never throws. - TwitchCredentialCheckBackgroundService runs it ~10 s after start and every 6 h. It decides at run time whether it is under the test host (the test host applies its environment late). - TwitchCredentialStatus is shared with every real broadcast: a refusal sets it, a success clears it, so a real publish is the authority over the startup check. - /healthz stays status ok (a wrong secret must not restart the container in a loop) and adds pubsub / pubsubStatus / pubsubCheckedAt. - A publish that fails because Twitch refuses the EBS's credentials is a 503 with X-EDNexus-Pubsub-Rejected: credentials, instead of a 502 a proxy can rewrite. Other PubSub failures stay 502. App - StreamStatePublishStatus.BackendRejectedByTwitch, mapped from that header. It is retried like any failure (the operator can fix the backend while the app runs) and is not a re-login. - A warning bar on the main window (the Settings status line is only seen with Settings open), raised by StreamCardWarning and cleared by the next success. Tests: EBS 212 (+26), full solution 1809 passed. The key app tests were shown to fail without the change. Limits, stated in the README: that Twitch verifies the token before the body is reasoned from its docs, not observed, so the startup check's accepted means not refused; only a real broadcast proves the credentials. the publish pump so this status continues retrying after MaxPublishRetries is
exhausted, using a slow fixed interval such as MaxRetryAfter; preserve the
existing bounded retry behavior for other failure statuses.

TwitchPubSubClient.BroadcastAsync to return a result that distinguishes
Published, CredentialsRejected, and other failures; classify each broadcast
response using its current status code and keep shared credential state
unchanged for non-credential failures. In Program.cs, branch on the returned
result rather than credentials.State so only CredentialsRejected produces the
credential marker and 503, while other failures retain the plain 502 response.

…ing a backend fault - BroadcastAsync now returns PubSubBroadcastResult (Published, CredentialsRejected, Failed) and the update-state endpoint branches on THIS call's result. It used to read the shared credential status, which stays 'rejected' after an earlier 403, so a later 400 or Twitch outage was reported as a credentials problem (503 + marker) instead of a plain 502. The shared status is unchanged and still feeds /healthz. - A BackendRejectedByTwitch publish no longer counts against the bounded retry budget: it retries indefinitely, but slowly (24x the publish floor, capped at MaxRetryAfter: two minutes at the default floor). With no earlier successful publish even the heartbeat wake is skipped, so giving up after five tries left an idle commander's card stale until something changed, contradicting the on-screen warning's 'it keeps retrying'. Ordinary failures stay bounded. Both new regression tests were shown to fail on the previous behaviour. EDNexus.Ebs.Tests 214 (+2), EDNexus.Tests 1126 (+2); full solution twice, no failures. Problem
Live updates to the Twitch card were silently broken for at least 72 hours. Datadog showed every PubSub call from the EBS failing with
403 JWT could not be verifiedfrom the very first one, while the service started fine, stored every card, answered/healthzwithok, and returned a bare502to the desktop app (which a proxy then rewrote toerror code: 502). Viewers who loaded the channel still saw a correct card, so nothing looked broken, and nobody had a way to tell why updates stopped. What this adds
EBS
401/403is logged at error and names the three settings to check (Twitch__ExtensionSecret,Twitch__ExtensionId,Twitch__OwnerUserId).400or success means "not refused". Anything else is inconclusive and changes nothing. It never throws or stops the service./healthzstill answersstatus: "ok"(a wrong secret must not get the container restarted in a loop) and addspubsub: unknown | accepted | rejected,pubsubStatus,pubsubCheckedAt.503+X-EDNexus-Pubsub-Rejected: credentialsinstead of a502whose body a proxy can replace. Other PubSub failures stay502. The card is stored either way.Desktop app
BackendRejectedByTwitch, mapped from that header. It is retried like any other failure (the operator can fix the backend while the app is running) and is deliberately not a re-login.StreamCardWarningand cleared by the next successful publish. The existing Settings status line is only seen with Settings open, which is not while playing.Verified

403 JWT could not be verified). That Twitch verifies the token before it looks at the body (so a good credential yields400for the bogus target) is reasoned from its documentation. If Twitch checks the body first, a bad credential would read as "accepted" at startup, which is a missed alarm, never a false one; the real-broadcast path would still catch it on the first publish. This is stated in the EBS README. To confirm on a deployment: the check logs one of two distinct lines ~10 s after start.Unrelated
EddnBridgeBatchingTests.A_run_of_signals_is_sent_as_one_message_when_the_next_event_arrivesfailed once in a full parallel run and then passed 6/6 alone and on three full re-runs. It uses fixedTask.Delay(100)windows, so it looks like a timing flake under load. Not touched here.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
