Did you test this in a container? I vaguely remember that the k8s version started failing (even though non-k8s was working OK) after the last time we updated log4j (I think that was maybe in the dataone-indexer repo??)

No, I didn't test it on k8s. It was an Metacat issue that the obsoleted elements in the k8s log4j2.properties prevented Metacat starting up.
