📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Callers must explicitly supply an algorithm despite the advertised SHA-256 default, and SHAKE requests fail. Large inputs can also consume substantial worker resources. Resolve these issues before merging. Pre-merge checks |

🟡 Default hash algorithm unavailable through API
When callers omit algorithm, the tool API rejects the request before hash_generator_handler can apply its SHA-256 default. The parameter validator requires every declared parameter, so text-only requests fail.
Learn more
The tool registry treats every parameter in ToolInfo.parameters as required. It validates parameters before invoking the handler in invoke_tool. Both text and algorithm are declared, but the handler supplies defaults when either is missing. The new tests call the handler directly, so they do not exercise the public execute route.
Example: POST /api/tools/hash_generator/execute with {"parameters":{"text":"hello"}} returns status: "failed" and Missing required tool parameter, instead of the SHA-256 digest of hello.
Recommended fix: Make the algorithm optional in the registry's parameter contract while preserving string validation when supplied, and test both omitted and explicit algorithms through the execute endpoint. If empty text is also a supported default, express that in the same contract.

🟡 SHAKE hash requests always fail
When callers choose shake_128 or shake_256, hashlib.new accepts the algorithm but h.hexdigest() raises without a length. The API returns a failed result instead of a hash.
Learn more
The fallback branch constructs arbitrary names through hashlib.new without restricting them to fixed-length hashes. SHAKE-128 and SHAKE-256 are extensible-output functions: their hexdigest method requires a length argument. The execute endpoint converts the resulting TypeError into a failed tool execution.
Example: A request using {"text":"hello","algorithm":"shake_128"} passes parameter validation and hashlib.new, then returns status: "failed" and a missing-length error.
Recommended fix: Either reject SHAKE names as unsupported before constructing them, or add a bounded output-length parameter and call hexdigest(length) for SHAKE. Test the chosen behavior through the execute endpoint.

Bound the request body before hashing.
ExecuteRequest.parameters accepts strings without a length limit, and hash_generator_handler encodes and hashes the complete text value synchronously. Large requests can consume worker time and memory. Add an explicit text limit, or enforce an equivalent request-body limit before /api/tools/{code}/execute.

Reject variable-length SHAKE algorithms.
The hash_generator tool accepts shake_128 through hashlib.new, but h.hexdigest() requires a length for SHAKE algorithms. This raises an uncaught TypeError. Reject shake_128 and shake_256 before the fallback, or define a documented output length.

Make algorithm optional in the registered tool schema.
When an API caller supplies only text, ToolRegistry._validate_parameters rejects the request before hash_generator_handler can use its SHA-256 default. The direct-handler test does not exercise this path. Mark algorithm optional in the schema and validator, then test the registered API with an omitted algorithm.
