Add rkhunter rootkit scan to Security tab - #1396
Chieh-She-Shuai wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
Add an rkhunter-based rootkit and local security scan to the Security tab, mirroring the existing Lynis entry: install when needed, update data files, run an elevated scan, save the log to the user's home directory, then optionally remove. rkhunter returns a non-zero status on warnings, so the scan call is guarded and success is judged by the written log. - Line 107: Update the scan completion check in the `SCAN_STATUS` condition so a
nonempty `SCAN_LOG` and exit status 1 are not sufficient to accept the run;
require final scan-summary evidence before reporting completion, while
preserving the existing handling for empty logs and statuses greater than 1.
- Line 99: Update the rkhunter invocation in the scan pipeline to use its
--logfile option for the saved report, and keep tee’s live-output capture
separate from that report. Preserve the existing status-file handling.
- Around line 99-100: Capture the pipeline status immediately after the `tee
"$SCAN_LOG"` scan pipeline, before restoring `set -e`, and reject the report if
`tee` failed so a partial `$SCAN_LOG` is not accepted. Keep this write-status
check separate from the existing `rkhunter` status stored in `$STATUS_FILE`.
- Line 114: Remove the privileged `chown` invocation on `$SCAN_LOG` after `tee`
creates the report; do not replace it with another privileged ownership change.

Save the rkhunter log, not only its terminal output.
tee captures stdout, but rkhunter writes additional test details to its own log. The promised home-directory report therefore omits information needed to investigate findings. Use rkhunter’s --logfile option for the saved report, and keep live output separate from that file. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check the tee status before accepting the report.
This POSIX sh pipeline does not check tee after set +e disables errexit. A write failure after partial output can leave a nonempty $SCAN_LOG, so the later check can report an incomplete log as saved. Capture the pipeline status and reject the report when tee fails. Keep the expected rkhunter status handling separate.
This is a narrow local write-error case, such as a full $HOME, so the impact is minor.

Do not treat every exit status of 1 as a completed scan.
rkhunter can also exit with status 1 for a configuration error. If it prints that error, $SCAN_LOG is nonempty and this condition accepts an aborted scan as warnings found. Check for completion evidence, such as the final scan summary, before reporting success. The upstream configuration-check contract also assigns status 1 to configuration problems. Remove the privileged chown of the report path.
After tee creates $SCAN_LOG as the invoking user, another process with write access to $HOME can replace it with a symlink before the privileged chown. The chown can then change ownership of the symlink target.
checkSuperUser only checks group membership. It does not prove unrestricted root access through sudo or doas. The issue is therefore a conditional privilege-boundary violation, not an established critical escalation.

Description
Adds rkhunter Rootkit Scan to the Security tab, alongside the existing Lynis audit and the FirewallD/UFW baselines. It installs rkhunter when needed, updates its data files, runs an elevated rootkit and local security scan, saves the full report to the user's home directory, then optionally removes rkhunter.
It mirrors the existing
lynis-audit.shpattern (same package-manager arms and install/remove/prompt flow). Two rkhunter-specific details are handled:teepipe (guarded by a localset +e) and success is judged by that status rather than treating warnings as an error.$HOMEviatee, so the entry does not depend on/var/logor the system's syslog configuration.Testing
Tested on Ubuntu (apt-get, run as root): rkhunter installed, data-file update handled gracefully,
rkhunter --checkcompleted (378 rootkit checks, scan log saved to~/rkhunter-<timestamp>.log), warnings reported without failing the task, and the removal prompt shown.cargo buildandcargo xtask docgenrun clean; the generated walkthrough entry is included.Type of Change
