Context

When an agent replied on Slack, Telegram or WhatsApp, the message started with every step line it wrote while working ("Reading it for context.", "Checking PostHog next."). The real answer came after them, with nothing to show where it began.

The cause is in the channel render step. extract_answer_text joined every assistant message of the turn, and an agent writes a message before most tool calls. Model thinking was never the problem: fold() already drops it. These lines are ordinary messages, so nothing told them apart from the answer.

Changes

The final delivery now holds only what the agent said after its last tool. The live progress message still shows the steps, so the chat shows that the agent is working until the answer replaces it.

Before:

Step 1: I'll list the files in my working folder.
Step 2: I'll run `date` in the terminal to get today's date.
Today is Thursday, November 5, 2026 ...

After:

Today is Thursday, November 5, 2026 ...

Real session data changed two details of the rule:

  • rename_session and rename_agent do not end the answer. It is common for an agent to answer, name the session, then close with "Session named." A plain "last message only" rule would send that line and lose the answer.
  • A turn that stops on a tool wrote no final message, so it keeps all its text, as it does today.

Blank messages no longer count as text. A whitespace-only last message cannot become a blank reply, and a turn of only whitespace sends the no-answer notice.

Tests

  • Added render and outbox worker tests. test_the_answer_leaves_out_what_the_agent_said_between_tools failed before the fix with 'Reading the thread for context.\nThe invite failed on email casing.' != 'The invite failed on email casing.' and passes now.
  • pytest oss/tests/pytest/unit/channels: 1546 passed.
  • Replayed 4,523 real local turns through the old and new code. 1,851 replies got shorter (29% fewer characters overall), 2,672 stayed the same, and none became empty.
  • Ran the same prompt twice on the local stack through a real agent and the real outbox worker, once on each code path. See Demo.

Known limit: an agent can write its answer, call a real tool such as write, then close with one short line. Only the closing line is delivered. This matched about 3 of the 4,523 replayed turns. An answer repeated around rename_session also stays doubled, as it does today.

Demo

Local embed connection, Job Search Agent, same prompt on each code path. Each image shows the reply text stored in channel_outbox_events, which is what the worker hands to the channel adapter. These are not Slack screenshots: no Slack workspace is connected locally. The embed widget itself does not change, because it draws its chat from session records.

Before After
before-delivered-reply after-delivered-reply
The step lines sit on top of the answer. The agent wrote the same step lines in this turn, and only the answer is delivered.

What to QA

  • In Slack, ask an agent a question that needs several tools. The message shows progress while it runs, then becomes only the final answer.
  • On WhatsApp, ask the same. Only the final answer arrives.
  • Regression: start a new session with a simple question, so that the agent names the session. The answer must still arrive, not only "Session named."

Channel replies joined every assistant message of a turn, so the step lines an
agent writes between tool calls reached Slack, Telegram and WhatsApp above the
answer. The final delivery now holds only what the agent said after its last
tool. rename_session and rename_agent do not end the answer, because agents
often answer first and name the session afterwards. A turn that stops on a tool
keeps all its text. The live progress message is unchanged.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Completed replies now show the final assistant response rather than intermediate tool activity or thought records.
    • Multiple assistant messages after the last tool call are joined together, and earlier assistant text is retained if a turn ends with a tool call or has no text after the last non-housekeeping message.
    • Blank or whitespace-only messages are excluded. Assistant text around session-renaming activity remains available in the reply.

Completed turns now use extract_final_answer to select assistant text for rendering. The extractor accounts for tool and rename records, ignores blank text, and falls back to all assistant text when no final text remains. The outbox uses the extracted answer to detect whether a turn has content.

Changes: Final answer extraction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extraction and channel rendering
api/oss/src/core/channels/render/render.py, api/oss/tests/pytest/unit/channels/test_channels_render.py
The renderer uses extract_final_answer for completed turns. The extractor distinguishes housekeeping tool calls, ignores blank text, and falls back to all assistant text when needed. Tests cover extraction cases and rendered replies.
Outbox answer detection
api/oss/src/tasks/asyncio/channels/outbox.py, api/oss/tests/pytest/unit/channels/test_channels_outbox_worker.py
The outbox uses extract_final_answer to detect whether a completed turn has an answer. Tests cover posted final content and whitespace-only messages.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 44.44% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 60.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 9 functions across 4 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Dependent tests finished. Post /preview for manual review. Environment absence verified; retained storage requires separate provider accounting.

Post /preview as a new comment to request a one-hour preview. Repeating it while active does not extend the hour.
Preview data is disposable. Expiry is enforced by the next successful cleanup sweep, not an exact timer.
Environment deletion stops its compute. Provider-retained storage and permanent services may still be billed.
