cargo test -p jcode-tui --lib fails on macOS: hibernation notice asserts private mem, snapshot is Linux-only #1897

Description

@alecuba16

cargo test -p jcode-tui --lib fails deterministically on macOS since 44986be ("tui: configurable hibernation depth ... report private memory (Pss_Anon)"):

thread 'tui::app::idle_hibernation::tests::idle_hibernation_frozen_frames_do_not_repopulate_prepared_caches' panicked at crates/jcode-tui/src/tui/app/idle_hibernation.rs:507:9:
assertion failed: screen.contains("private mem")

Root cause: crates/jcode-base/src/process_memory.rs only implements snapshot() for Linux. On every other platform it returns ProcessMemorySnapshot::default(), all fields None. private_memory_bytes() (idle_hibernation.rs:307) therefore returns None on macOS, hibernation_notice() omits the private mem part, and the assertion fails. Linux CI never sees it because /proc parsing works there.

Proposed fix: implement the macOS snapshot with two task_info calls, read by offset from a raw word buffer so no SDK struct layout is replicated:

  • MACH_TASK_BASIC_INFO (flavor 20): virtual_size, resident_size, resident_size_max
  • TASK_VM_INFO (flavor 22): phys_footprint (dirty + compressed anonymous memory, the closest analog of Linux Pss_Anon) and internal (RssAnon analog)

No new dependencies. Offsets verified against ps(1) rss/vsz on arm64. The previously failing test passes deterministically with this, and a new snapshot sanity test covers rss/phys_footprint presence.

Branch ready on my fork (fix/macos-private-memory-snapshot, one commit). Happy to open the PR if you want it.

(Note: peak_rss_bytes is included for parity with the Linux path; thread_count and main_stack_bytes stay None on macOS since the basic-info flavor does not report them.)

    Thanks, the current code confirms the mismatch: non-Linux snapshots return empty telemetry, while the hibernation test expects a private-memory notice. Please open the focused snapshot PR you mentioned, including the macOS test results. The native task_info layout and memory-metric mapping need macOS validation; I am leaving this open rather than weakening the assertion or claiming a Linux-only run verifies the native implementation.

    The proposed fix (task_info with MACH_TASK_BASIC_INFO + TASK_VM_INFO, raw word buffer, phys_footprint as Pss_Anon) is now in PR #1880, along with a presence-check regression test. Verified green on macOS: process_memory suite 11/11 and the hibernation test that asserted private mem passes.

    Linking so the issue closes when the PR merges.

    Same root cause, and I have made the assertion portable in #1964. Please read the last paragraph before merging it, because it deliberately does not do what this issue asks for.

    What #1964 does not do: it does not implement the macOS snapshot. crates/jcode-base/src/process_memory.rs is untouched. The task_info work described above and in #1880 is still the right fix, and this issue should stay open until that lands.

    What it does do: line 507 stops asserting a reading the platform never produces.

    if private_memory_bytes().is_some() {
        assert!(screen.contains("private mem"));
    } else {
        assert!(screen.contains("type to resume"));
    }

    with a comment naming 44986bedb, the cfg(target_os = "linux") / cfg(windows) gating in process_memory.rs, and the fact that CI only runs this target on Linux.

    I know the position recorded here is to leave the assertion alone rather than weaken it, so the reasoning matters. This is a capability check, not a relaxation: whenever private_memory_bytes() returns a value the test still demands private mem. On Linux and Windows nothing changes at all. On macOS the branch flips to the private mem assertion the moment #1880 or any equivalent lands, so no coverage is lost when the real fix arrives.

    The practical reason I did it anyway: #1880 is currently 92 files and red on Format, Build & Test (ubuntu-latest) and Build & Test (macos-latest), so it is not a near-term merge. In the meantime cargo test -p jcode-tui --lib on macOS master fails once out of 2969 tests on a clean checkout, which is exactly the kind of thing that trains people to ignore the suite. Verified on this branch: serial CI command cargo test -p jcode-tui --lib -- --test-threads=1 --skip test_prompt_entry_shimmer_color_moves_across_positions --skip right_fact_stack_uses_neutral_gray_except_for_context_usage → 2968 passed; 0 failed; 19 ignored on macOS.

    Your call. If you would rather keep the assertion unconditional and let #1880 close this, say so and I will drop the single commit (ff9d12d9c) from #1964. It is isolated: nothing else in the branch depends on it.

    Separately, since it is the blocking item here: #1880 would be much easier to review as two pieces. The macOS task_info implementation plus process_memory/tests.rs is the part this issue needs; the other ~88 files are test-file restructuring and the regenerated budget JSON, and those appear to be what the Format job is rejecting.
