I’m experiencing repeated failures when using GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio 2022 version 17.14.6. The issue occurs both when generating commit messages and when using Copilot for code suggestions or fixes.

Error Messages:

During commit message generation:
[CopilotClient] Unknown exception: Could not parse ov
System.Exception: Error occurred while invoking intent 'None'.

During code suggestions:
fatal: unrecognized sequence when parsing git diff output

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

• Tested in multiple projects (issue occurs in all).
• Deleted the .vs<project>\copilot-chat\ cache folder.
• Signed out and back into GitHub Copilot.
• Verified GitHub Copilot is installed (version 17.14.786.1071).
• Ran git diff --cached manually — no errors.
• Visual Studio is fully updated and repaired via the Installer.
• No suspicious Git configuration values.
• Issue persists even in brand-new projects.

System Information:

• Visual Studio 2022 version: 17.14.6
• GitHub Copilot version: 17.14.786.1071
• Windows version: 24H2 26200.5651
• Git version: 2.17.1.windows.2

This seems to be a known issue in VS 2022 17.14.x with GitHub Copilot.

✅ Try the following workarounds:

• Update Git to the latest version (your version is outdated).
• Clear Copilot cache folders under %AppData% and %LocalAppData%.
• Disable Copilot preview features in Visual Studio settings.
• Try in VS Code to confirm if the issue is VS-specific.
• Rollback Visual Studio to 17.13.x — Copilot works more reliably there.

If the issue persists, report it to GitHub with logs from Help → View Activity Log.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have tried the following workarounds:

• Update Git to the latest version (your version is outdated).
  -> Done, no effect.

• Clear Copilot cache folders under %AppData% and %LocalAppData%.
  -> Done, no effect.

• Disable Copilot preview features in Visual Studio settings.
  -> Done, no effect.

• Try in VS Code to confirm if the issue is VS-specific.
  -> Copilot works fine in VS Code.

• Rollback Visual Studio to 17.13.x — Copilot works more reliably there.
  -> This might work, but it's not an option for this project.

✅ Based on recommendations in other threads, I changed my regional settings from Norwegian to English. After doing this, Copilot started working without issues.

However, when I reverted the regional settings back to Norwegian, the problem returned.

I’ve been experiencing the exact same issue since yesterday on version 17.14.5.

This is a very known issue.
Try these --

1. Press windows buttons and type 'run' there type -- %AppData% and %LocalAppData%.. In both of them delete any copilot file you find.
2. Update your git.

This is still an issue with Visual Studio 2022 Version 17.14.39 (August 2026).
It mainly manifests when you are adding or modifying a binary resource to the project, e.g. png icon.
